Marion County Public School Employees show their best Flash Mob pose at Target.
|
Greetings!
| | More than 600 volunteers throughout Marion County participated in United Way's 2010 Campaign kick-off on Wednesday, September 15. Were you one of them? If so thanks so much for being part of Marion County's FIRST FLASH MOB! From spontaneous poses, positive picketing and dances, volunteers lined streets and area stores throughout the day to educate people about United Way.
"This is something that United Way has never done before, "said Maureen Quinlan, United Way of Marion County president. "It takes all of us working together to make a difference. We hope to inspire more people to do their part and get involved."
Volunteer campaign co-chairs, Marion County Chief of Staff Dan Kuhn and Ocala City Councilwoman Mary Sue Rich announced a 2010 campaign goal of $2 million dollars for Marion County at a closing event that took place on the Ocala downtown square. The amount announced is the same amount that was raised in 2009. To date, 20 percent has already been raised from the 28 Pacesetter Companies that started their workplace campaigns in July and from other early donations.
"In these challenging times it is easy to expect our neighbor to step up and help. Most likely your neighbor is looking for you to do the same," Kuhn said. "Each of us must do our part to help Marion County move forward towards recovery."
"The United Way is committed to doing things differently this year," Rich said. "We are finding ways to include different people in our efforts. The flash mobs were just the start." |

| United Way announces new focus areas | | Times have certainly changed but one thing that has remained a constant is that United Way is about the local community, addressing local needs. United Way of Marion County is taking on a new focus for the community around the areas of Education, Income and Health - the building blocks for a good life. We all need a quality education that leads to a stable job, income that can support a family through retirement and good health. These three issues are threaded together. We are all affected by education, income and health and have been since the day we were born and will be to the end of our lives. Read more |
| Endowment Grant applications available | |
United Way of Marion County is now accepting applications for 2010 Endowment Fund Grant. Any non-profit human services agency that serves Marion County is eligible to submit a grant application, whether or not the agency is currently funded by United Way. Application forms are available online at http://www.uwmc.org/ or by calling Chris Cotter at United Way, 352-732-9696, ext. 209. Funding proposal applications will be accepted through Friday, October 15.
The Fund was created by United Way's Board of Directors in 1989 to meet future community needs and is separate from the annual campaign contributions and allocation process. This year, the funding will align with United Way's new direction in the areas of Education, Income and Health. Grants serving these areas will be considered first. In 2009, the Endowment Committee awarded $107,161 in grants to 11 human service agencies in Marion County. |
