United Way of Marion County recently recognized four volunteers at the annual meeting of the membership event held Friday, March 26 at Amarie's Banquets & Catering in Dunnellon.
Dirk Leeward of Ocala4Sale, was awarded the Bonnie Heath Award of Excellence, which honors a volunteer each year whose leadership and commitment to the United Way of Marion County has stood out above others over a period of at least ten years. Leeward first participated as a member of the United Way Ambassadors, a group of young leaders, in the late 1980s. He is serving his 10th year on the United Way Board of Directors. He has served on the allocations committee, assisted in the technological development of the organization, and he was instrumental in starting the Young Leaders Society and the Marion Volunteer Network. |

United Way also recognized Dave Fechtman of Root Theory Advisors with the Frances Thigpin Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is given to a volunteer who goes above and beyond what he or she may have been asked or recruited to do. Fechtman served in a variety of roles such as campaign cabinet member, founding volunteer of the Marion County Prosperity Campaign, serves on the committee that is analyzing our community's needs for a volunteer center in Marion County, sits on the United Way Board of Directors and most recently served as campaign chairman. |

Two first time awards were also given out to a Youth Member of the Year and Young Leader Member of the Year. Virginia Liddell, a senior at Vanguard High School, was presented with the Youth United Way Youth Member of the Year award and Lisa Rice from the Marion County Sheriff's Office was recognized as United Way's Young Leader of the Year. |

CenturyLink will host a four person Best Ball Scramble format golf tournament on Saturday, April 17, 2010. All proceeds from the event will be donated to United Way of Marion County.
The tournament will be held at Stone Creek Golf Club, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The cost is $280 per team. Deadline to register is April 9th.
Entry fee includes golf, cart, lunch, and grab bags.
Contests include: longest drive and closest to the pin.
Sponsorships are available for $125 per hole without a team or $100 with a team.

Women's Leadership Council accepting funding prosposals

United Way's Women's initiative, Women of Worth is now accepting funding proposals from local non-profit human service agencies that serve Marion County.
This year, the Women of Worth has aligned with United Way's community impact focus on homeless school age children.

Youth United Way is looking for you! |
|
Applications will be available for high school juniors and seniors to join Youth United Way starting Monday, April 12.
Youth United Way is a program that provides a forum for local youth to develop leadership skills and demonstrate the importance of youth civic involvement as a key component of community change.
Applications are due
Friday, May 7.
