Starfish Community Reports Record System Usage in 2011

It is hard to believe that we are already well into 2012.  Before we let 2011 go, we thought it would be fun to see what our client community accomplished last year with the Starfish system.  Here are some highlights:

  • More than 162,000 at-risk students were identified.
  • More than 760,000 progress surveys were completed by instructors (50% of all flags raised).
  • More than 648,000 flags were automatically raised based on student performance as recorded in the learning management system and student information system (43% of all flags raised).
  • More than 45,000 flags were manually raised by instructors.
  • Nearly 240,000 notes were documented in the system by advisors and instructors.
  • Of the hundreds of thousands of appointments scheduled:
    • 45% were with advising
    • 36% were with tutoring
    • 7% were with faculty
    • 79% were self-scheduled by students
Thank you to the Starfish community for your support, dedication, and partnership as we work together to help students achieve their goals!

Starfish Celebrates the Successes of Academic Advisors with "Share Your Starfish Story"

Late last Fall, we launched an online program to celebrate the successes of academic advisors everywhere who have touched the life of a student. The program invites academic advisors to join an online forum to post their own story as well as to read the stories of their colleagues around the world.

Specifically, academic advisors are encouraged to share a story about a student who stands out in their minds. The student who, with the help of an advisor, decided not to drop out of school. Or the student who overcame challenges to find success.

"Each day, academic advisors selflessly help students achieve their goals or overcome challenges. As we all know, this work often goes without much recognition," said Heidi Fischer, assistant director of academic advising at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. "The online forum is a great opportunity for the advising community to celebrate the successes of our students. It's inspiring to read the stories shared by my peers at other institutions - they are proof that there's a community of advisors with the same goal: student development and student success."
