Paul Smith's College Supports a Comprehensive Approach to Student Success With Starfish
Facilitates Campuswide Coordination to Help Students

Paul Smith's College is a private institution enrolling approximately 900 students. The institution identified through its Middle States Accreditation Self-Study and strategic planning process that students dropping out were not just those traditionally considered high risk. As a result, the institution set out to expand its efforts to support all students in a more comprehensive manner.
After evaluating several solutions, Paul Smith's College adopted Starfish in the fall of 2009. By providing a centralized secure database for student success information, Starfish allows the campus community to track interactions with students without duplicating efforts. During the spring 2010 term, 91 percent of faculty utilized the early alert survey, communicating their concerns about student performance and raising nearly 100 flags each week of the term. In addition, Starfish automatically triggered more than 700 warning flags based on individual midterm course grades as reported in the institution's student information system, PowerCAMPUS®.
"Prior to Starfish, we had an early alert process where instructors would send us their feedback on students. Although a large percentage of faculty would participate, the process was cumbersome and time-intensive," said Dr. Loralyn Taylor, registrar and director of institutional research at Paul Smith's College. "Now with Starfish, not only have we increased the level of instructor participation, but we also have made the information available to advisors in real time, without having to spend days tabulating the results. This is a huge advantage to our staff and to our students."

New Feature Announcements Enhanced Automation for Tutors and Advisors

Integrated Tutoring. Starfish can manage multiple tutoring venues (e.g., central tutoring offices, department-specific services) while offering students a personalized menu of tutoring choices based on the student's courses. Additional functions include recurring appointments, no-show tracking and attendance verification.
More Efficient Advising. Now advisors can email one or more students directly from Starfish. And they can write notes on students who share the same problem - all at once. The common problem of keeping your Starfish calendar up to date with your Microsoft® Outlook® calendar goes away through two-way synchronization with Microsoft® Outlook®.
Cohort Management. Starfish makes it easy to track the performance of students within a specified cohort (e.g., student-athletes) with automatic notifications of low grades and the ability to send a Flag Survey™, an e-mail request for feedback, only to instructors who are currently teaching a student within a targeted cohort.
Enhanced Online High School Support. Starfish can now detect when a student has several late assignments at the same time, or when a student is
underperforming relative to the rest of the class on
several assignments. These features can be utilized to
notify teachers, principals and parents.

Colorado State University-Global Campus Adopts Starfish to Bolster Success Efforts for Online Students Fully Online Institution Reinforces Commitment to Helping Students Complete Education Goals As one of three campuses that comprise the Colorado State University System, CSU-Global Campus provides a high-quality online university program focused on the needs of adult, nontraditional learners who are working to advance themselves in today's competitive global marketplace.
Starfish automatically checks the academic performance of students within the Blackboard® course management system (e.g., missed assignments, attendance, lack of activity in the online course) and raises a flag when an issue is identified.
"Our previous process for tracking students was quite labor intensive and placed a significant burden on our faculty members to complete what is otherwise an administrative function of reporting and tracking. Starfish is allowing us to achieve the same objective in a more efficient way by making use of the data that we already had in place but could not tap as easily. Now we are able to connect with students sooner when issues arise, reinforcing our commitment to their personal success," said Angela Ellis, associate dean of
student success for CSU-Global Campus.
