The December 2009 issue of Campus Technology centered around new technology geared toward boosting student retention. Tulsa Community College was featured in the section about data-driven retention strategies for their utilization of Starfish EARLY ALERT to track at-risk students.
For online students, automated alerts trigger when a student does not log in to Blackboard for seven or more days, if an assignment is submitted one week late, or if a student's grade point average falls below 70%. Customized messages are even generated to the flagged students themselves - easing significant burdens on faculty who used to remind students about participation manually.

University of Mary Washington Introduces Electronic Advising Program with Starfish Institution Enhances the Ability for Students and Advisors to Connect In the spring of 2009, University of Mary Washington conducted a pilot program with 40 first-year faculty advisors using Starfish CONNECT for their first-year students. Following a one-week implementation period, Starfish enabled more than 400 first-year students to schedule appointments through the Internet with their faculty advisors. For the fall term, the institution has made Starfish available to all students. Advisors also will maintain and share their records of student interactions through Starfish.
"We had such a positive experience in the pilot program that we decided to introduce the system to all students," said JoAnn Schrass, associate dean of academic services. "In our post-pilot survey, we found that students loved the system and commented on how easy it was to use. Similarly, our faculty advisors liked how the system reduced the number of email and voicemail messages typically sent simply in their attempts to schedule time with students. Because they are also faculty members teaching courses, the faculty advisors indicated that they wanted to use Starfish for all their students, not just their advisees."
"We have wanted to go electronic for a long time," said Schrass. "Now an advisor is able to meet with a student literally anywhere with Internet access. Advisors log in to the system, pull up a student's folder, add notes from the meeting and share them with other advisors, instructors or even the student. The electronic files also provide a greater level of security because you don't have to worry about files getting misplaced or accidentally left out where they can be viewed by others."

San Jacinto College Accelerates Student Support for College Preparatory Courses With Starfish Courses Serve as a Bellwether for Student Success and Require Timely Problem Identification and Intervention "Approximately 53 percent of the students at San Jacinto College are first-generation college students," said Niki Whiteside, vice president of educational technology at San Jacinto College. "We have a tremendous opportunity to introduce a whole generation to the benefits of higher education. At the same time, we have a responsibility to teach them how college works and how to get through the system. As a result, we need support tools to keep track of our students in a more efficient and effective way."
Nearly a quarter of all students are enrolled in a variety of college preparatory courses in reading, math and writing. These courses lay the foundation for future coursework and provide valuable insight into a student's ultimate ability to be successful in college. Given the importance of these courses and the logistics of offering the courses at each of its campuses, the institution has sought to standardize its approach to student tracking and success intervention.
"For obvious reasons, we pay a lot of attention to students in college preparatory courses," said Whiteside. "We have selected Starfish to help us make certain that our faculty and advisors are looking at the same indicators of student success and following the same workflow to ensure that we are getting to students as quickly as possible to offer help and keep them on track. With Starfish, we are now able to spend more time helping students instead of being caught up in paperwork."
