Idaho Digital Learning Academy Adopts Starfish to Identify Struggling
Students in Online Courses Virtual Learning Organization Enhances Support Services for At-Risk Students Founded in 2002, IDLA is a state virtual school established by the Idaho legislature to provide Idaho students with greater access to a diverse assortment of courses. The virtual school was created to address the educational needs of all Idaho students: traditional, homeschooled, at-risk, gifted and adult learners.
IDLA selected Starfish to help identify students who are struggling with their coursework or need additional services to help them be successful. "In an online class, there is no 'back row' from which a teacher can draw in a disinterested student. One of the best ways to gauge student engagement is to keep track of how often they log in to their online courses. Unfortunately, this is also one of the greatest challenges," said Ryan Gravette, technology director for IDLA. "With Starfish, we will know this in real time, and be able to reengage students and get them back in the class."
Given the asynchronous class style of online courses in which students are logging in at a time that best meets their personal schedule, classroom tracking can be difficult and time consuming. Starfish will immediately notify the appropriate IDLA team members (e.g., teacher, site coordinator, parents, even the student) when a student has not logged in to the course management system (i.e., Blackboard) for more than seven days. In addition, Starfish will communicate a similar concern when a student receives two consecutive progress reports with a score of less than 70 percent.
"The impact of Starfish on the IDLA organization is going to be very large. We are changing the way we work and the way we go about identifying our at-risk students, and helping them accomplish their goals," said Gravette. "Starfish is giving us a chance to build better relationships with students, and communicate to them that someone cares, someone is paying attention and wants them to be successful." |
Starfish and eTutoring.org Partner to Connect Students to Their Success Institutions to Identify At-Risk Students and Link Them to Tutoring in Real Time
We are pleased to announce a
new partnership with eTutoring.org, the collaborative online tutoring
program and platform that is part of the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium (CTDLC). Together, we hope to offer academic
institutions an unparalleled opportunity to identify students who need
additional help and then to provide that extra help in a timely manner. With a discount on Starfish's services made
available for all of CTDLC's members and clients, the partnership is intended to help institutions improve
retention and success rates during the first year of college when students need
the most help by leveraging technology to efficiently monitor and support
student success. >>learn more about the partnership

The Latest and Greatest from StarfishNew Enhancements and Functionality, Based on User Feedback and Client SuggestionsThe Flag Lab™If you come up with a new statistical formula to identify at-risk
students, how long will it take to "get that into Starfish"? With the
Flag Lab it can take as little as a few hours! Similar to how
Blackboard Building Blocks work, Starfish can now dynamically load new
algorithms and approaches for finding at-risk students with no downtime
or releases necessary. Want a new rule to find students
underperforming by two standard deviations in two or more classes? No
problem, use the Flag Lab. ANGEL IntegrationStarfish CONNECT and Starfish EARLY ALERT now integrate with the ANGEL Learning Management Suite. Flag SurveyWant to make it even easier for instructors to raise flags? With the new Flag Survey, jointly designed with Gallaudet University, you can send email reminders to some or all instructors asking them to review their students. The email includes a link which takes the instructor to a one-page form where he/she can easily indicate which students, if any, are having trouble. Appointment TypesAs university broaden Starfish CONNECT usage to more and more departments with different services (e.g., tutoring, financial aid, disability services), having just one list of appointment reasons was not valuable. With Appointment Types, each service can have its own list of reasons for meeting with students. Thanks Duquesne University for the help on this one. Email Note to StudentsSave yourself the time and effort of cutting and pasting the emails you send to students into Starfish Notes. Now your Student Notes can also email the student directly. >>register to attend a Webinar |
