Greetings!
Chicks and Bunnies
Saturday
will be lots of fun at the Dacula Farmer's Market. In addition to our
usual vendors and their wares, Harbins Country Store will be our
special guest vendor for the day with fuzzy baby chicks to sell, and the
Goat Lady will bring adorable baby bunnies. Each chick should
be female and cost $4.95 plus tax. If anyone would like the joy of
raising a couple of chicks but can't keep them as adults, I will help
adopt them out to a farm once they become too big to manage at home.
The breeds of chicks Harbins Country Store will bring include:
Ameraucanas (lay blue or green eggs)
Rhode Island Reds (brown egger)
White Rocks (brown egger)
Barred Rocks (brown egger)
Silver Laced Wyandottes (brown egger)
Buff Orpingtons (brown egger)
For further
info contact Harbins Country Hardware at 770-963-1950.
The Goat
Lady will have Californian bunnies which look like Siamese Kitties
when they grow up.The price is $15 each.
Spring Fever Food Drive
Be sure to bring any extra, shelf-stable foods you may have in your
pantry for the
food drive. We received lots of donations this past week to make a good
start. You can leave donations under the Easter Egg Tree. If you
fall in love with a particular Easter egg, you can take it home for a donation
of $5 or more to the Quinn House Food Bank. Just leave your donation in the jar
under the tree and take your favorite egg.
Produce
The first vegetables of the season are starting to show
up. You can expect to see things like green onions/scallions at the
market, and I will attempt to cook Mongolian beef using them and my beef.
Spring
Planting
Creative Enterprises brings beautiful plants from their
greenhouse to sell each Saturday. The seedlings are very well grown and
come in unusual varieties you may not find at other nurseries. Remember
to harden them off before planting outside. Hardening
off refers to transitioning of tender seedlings from a comfortable greenhouse
to the harsher world outdoors. I usually take my new plants outside each
morning, place them in a protected location out of the wind, and bring them
inside for 4 or 5 nights. On the last night I leave them outside all
night long to prep for planting. Of course I choose a night that's not
going to be too cold. Right now you should consider cool weather crops
like broccoli, Swiss chard and lettuces. Tomatoes should stay indoors
until mid-April.
Kudos
Be sure to
congratulate Jon and Summer with Goodness Gracious Granola. Their
"You Struck Gold" granola took first prize in the Snack Category at
the Taste of Georgia competition hosted by UGA. Of course we didn't
need anyone to tell us how delicious their products are, but it's nice that
other folks are catching on. Have a great week, and I look forward to
seeing you at the market this week.
Best regards,
Anthony Stokes
