Greetings!
Saturday
was a fine day at the Market. The sun
shone, the chickens clucked, and we heralded the coming spring by moving the
Market out of doors. These days we
tend to think of spring as a time of growth and abundance, but historically
farmer's suffered badly thru the early months of the year. New crops were just going into the ground and
a "spring harvest" usually meant foraging for dandelion greens. How did they get by in those tough
times? Most had to rely on the goods they
preserved and had set aside in storage.
But even so, by spring, these supplies were rapidly dwindling.
Many
of our friends and neighbors are similarly suffering in this early spring. The tough economy has affected many local
families who need assistance filling their empty pantries.
The
Dacula Farmer's Market would like to invite you to help your neighbors. From now thru April 9 we will be collecting
canned and dry goods to donate to the Quinn House Food Bank in
Lawrenceville. So look thru your pantry
and bring a bit of your abundance to share.
A box will be located at the Market every week to receive your
gifts. If you would like to put up
flyers or place a collection box in your church or neighborhood, contact
Anthony Stokes at StokesFarm@bellsouth.net
I
hope to see you all at the Market this coming Saturday.
Best regards, Anthony Stokes Market Manager |

The Real Cost of Eating Organic
by Darlene Amos, The Herbmom
If you have been a member of the organic community for any
length of time and love it, you have no doubt tried to sing its praises to your
friends and neighbors. Inevitably, the
group cry that follows is usually, "You know, I would really like to try it but
it's so expensive." While at first
glance this might appear true, let's examine this common misconception very
closely. By looking at the cost of 10
pounds of organic vegetables, the price per pound may initially appear
higher. But if you truly break down what
you are actually getting for that price, eating organic always gives you the
better value, item per item, whether we are talking about fresh produce,
natural animal products or manufactured organic goods.(read more)
