Greetings!
Every Saturday at the Dacula
Farmer's Market is exciting. We have
products to please everyone ranging from delicious, organic spinach, to rare
Marans eggs, and your favorite Southern style condiments. There is even opportunity to volunteer. Please join us each week at Rancho Alegre
Farm/ 2225 Givens Rd/ Dacula GA 30019
from 10AM to 2PM. Become a fan
of our Facebook page to receive
reminders for the Dacula Buyer's Club deadlines, last minute weather closings
and other important details.
Last Week
Wasn't Saturday great!!
There were many wonderful products
but Anthony Brown gets my personal award for the most interesting new
product. He brought some of his rare,
mahogany colored Marans eggs to sell. They
were the color of dark brown shoe leather.
In France they are the choice egg for mayonnaise because researchers
have demonstrated that they are never contaminated internally with salmonella. Of course in America we legally have to
recommend that you cook your eggs well done, but the French are certainly not
dummies where food is concerned.
Next Week
I'm really looking forward to this coming Saturday, because
we're having a special guest vendor. Chef Sharon Batchel of Serenity Gardens
will be with us selling her home grown and canned Southern delicacies. Her garden and kitchen are in Buford, where
she makes everything from chow chow to chutney.
I'm especially looking forward to tasting her Mayhaw jelly. If you'd like to check out her product list
visit http://www.serenitygardens.com.
Volunteer
Opportunity
We need volunteers to sell
heirloom tomato and other plants for Creative Enterprises this spring. CE is a non-profit training center for adults
with disabilities in Lawrenceville. The
clients help grow flowers and vegetable plants in the greenhouse. CE will deliver those plants to us, but we
need volunteers to set up a table, help customers, and collect money. All proceeds go to Creative Enterprises to
support their invaluable work within our community. Individuals or groups may volunteer for as
little as one market day or as much as the entire, two-month season. Sales take place each Saturday during the
market from March 6 thru mid-May. To
volunteer contact Anthony Stokes at stokesfarm@bellsouth.net.
See you at Market,

My Weekend at the GA Organics Conference
I've
just returned from a wonderful weekend at the Georgia Organics conference in
Athens with lots of inspiration and optimism toward building a better community
nourished by healthier food. This annual conference brings together farmers,
chefs, locavores and foodies to share their passions about locally and naturally
grown foods. The event includes many classes, workshops and seminars on a
variety of food and farm related topics.
I
was especially inspired by the Farm to School Program which educates children
about nutrition by integrating farming and food growing into their curriculum as
well as including locally and naturally grown foods in their daily lunches. If
you would like to know more, check out Georgia Organics' website on the topic
or www.farmtoschool.org
The conference
concluded with a wonderful Farmer's Feast with keynote speaker Carlo Petrini,
founder of Slow Food. That meal inspired me to host a Mother's Day
Dinner based on local and natural foods. If you are interested in attending
this dinner contact me. I
hope you'll all consider joining Georgia Organics and attending their conference
next year.

Sincerely,
Pilar
