National Day of Action
We are also proud to be working with Slow Food USA on their It's Time for Lunch! campaign. Let's work together to Get Real Food into our Schools. Join in your Community's Eat-In

Slow Food USA has launched a national campaign to tell Congress to provide real food and increased funding for more than 30 million children participating in the National School Lunch Program (part of the Child Nutrition Act that Congress will reauthorize in Fall, 2009)

The event will be held at Rancho Alegre Farm, Monday, September 7th at 12 Noon. The best news is, it's Free! Bring healthy food, your own plates, cups, utensils to reduce waste.

Invite your family, friends, co-workers and classmates to share good food and help bring awareness to the need for increased funding for the School Lunch Program.

Rancho Alegre is a great place to have a field trip for public and private elementary schools, daycares, playgroups, and home school groups.  We are also a Girl Scout approved facility so come earn a few patches at our farm.  Girls can participate in gardening, farming, equestrian and earth day events.

Field Trips are 1 1/2 hours  long and includes farming activities such as a goat-milking demo, cheese-making demo, tour of the farm on a hayride, meet and greet with the donkeys, horses, rabbits, chickens, and goat ($5 per child).  For an additional  $2 a student reserve an extra hour which includes the jump-house, playground, and access to our covered pavilion for a sack lunch.

  HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Immune Boosters

Although the flu season is here, there are foods that we can add to our diet to strengthen our immune system. A strong immune system is our first line of defense against illness. As a general rule of thumb, colorful fruits and vegetables should make up a large part of our diet, providing our bodies with necessary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, there are foods that can give us that extra boost of defense we'll need this flu season.
     - Mushrooms: Considered to be the best immune system booster, mushrooms are believed to hinder the replication of viruses. They also stimulate the production of white blood cells, increase cellular metabolism, and remove toxins.
     - Oats and Barley: Although in lesser levels, oats and barley contain the compounds similar to mushrooms.
     - Seafood: Crab, tuna, lobster, salmon, and many other seafoods are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are overall health boosters. Make sure your seafoods are from sustainable wild-caught sources.
     - Green, White, and Black Tea: These teas all contain high levels of antioxidants. Replace your coffee with tea for an instant health upgrade.
     - Yogurt: Due to the live active cultures, yogurt strengthens your body's resistance to bad bacteria by creating a healthy environment of good bacteria.
     - Sugar: Not an immune booster, in fact, a powerful immune weakener.
In order to have an optimal immune system and overall health, your diet should be just one part of your lifestyle. The other facets of your healthy lifestyle should include exercise, limited alcohol consumption, no smoking, limited processed food, and organic when possible.
