Case Study: Post Radial Keratotomy Patient receives Toric IOL Implants

1988 RK OU (Western Mass)
2002 Lasso Suture OS for progressive hyperopia (University Center)
2007 Presents to Boston Eye Group, wants less dependency on glasses.
MR OD = +2.50 -2.00 090 20/20
MR OS = +3.25 - 2.75 130 20/20
2008 Lasso suture removal OS to assess underlying Rx:
                Post op RX OS = +7.25 -4.25 x 118
12/2008 Clear Lens extraction (CLE) with Toric IOL OS:
                 Post CLE UCVA : 20/25
3/2009    CLE/Toric IOL OD
                Post CLE UCVA 20/30
This case was made difficult by the prior RK, progressive hyperopia and difficulty with IOL calculations after refractive surgery. He ended up with excellent results as biometry formulae are now more refined and the Toric IOL is an impressive addition to the IOL options available to us.

Wavefront-guided  LASIK delivers significantly better night driving performance than conventional  LASIK
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 This comparative study prospectively assessed simulated night driving  performance both before and six months after wavefront-guided (wLASIK) with a femtosecond  laser flap and conventional LASIK (cLASIK) using a mechanical keratome for the  treatment of moderate myopia. After surgery, performance on the night driving  simulator testing decreased 32 to 38 percent (data was collected from two  prospective clinical trials) in cLASIK eyes for all tasks, compared to 0 to 3  percent reduction with wLASIK. Performance improved significantly in 11 to 31  percent of the wLASIK group in every task compared to 2 to 7 percent increase in  the cLASIK group. The researchers note that wLASIK also improved mean visual  performance compared with spectacles. (Ophthalmology, April  2009)
Vitamins and anti-VEGF therapies can potentially reduce future growth in AMD- related visual impairment by 35 percent
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Researchers use a simulation model to forecast the epidemiology of AMD in a variety of treatment scenarios for the years 2010 through 2050, and found that expanding use of antioxidant vitamins in patients with early AMD and using  anti-VEGF therapy to treat subfoveal CNV can reduce the levels of future  AMD-attributable visual impairment and blindness by as much as 35 percent.
