A "Doubletree" Year of Giving Back

Where to start. So much has occurred in the past year. Lets begin with the charitable actions of our residents and members.

homeDoubletree resident Kathy Hruby founded the Shekinah Home for Women & Children to assist women and their kids who are homeless or lack adequate housing due to a variety of life circumstances. Her organization entered a contest to compete for a $50,000.00 grant. Many Doubletree residents voted daily for the cause.  In the end, they did not win the grant. But, Kathy says the organization will continue and added "Thank you to the residents of Doubletree for your support".

Doubletree sponsored a food drive for the local food pantry collecting bags and bags of food at the guard house. A drop-off station was assigned at the guard house on Randolph making for a convenient 24-hour drop off station for residents. It proved very convenient since so much food was received. Rollie Brauer, Winfield Township Trustee, sent a personal letter to the POA saying "Thank You" for being so generous.

POA Manager Terry Pingel went behind bars jailto help raise funds for MDA. Terry was escorted by police to jail where he met with the judge and was officially charged. His bail was set at $1,000.00. With help from several caring and good-hearted Doubletree residents bail was raised and exceeded. Over $1,600.00 was raised to help provide expert care for those affected with neuromuscular disease. Terry was later released and returned to the POA office. At days end MDA crowned your POA manager "Top Jail Bird" for exceeding his goal and being this year's event #1 fundraiser.

Firefighters enter Doubletree and collect food for the hungry. You may have heard the sirens blasting through the neighborhood. Many of you did because a lot of food was collected.

santa caresResidents, Don & Leslie Samburg, organized a holiday party for underprivileged children and their parents. The event was held at the Elite Academy and hosted by the Winfield Township Trustee with funding from Doubletree, Picasso's, and others. The day provided fun and gifts for over 60 children experiencing hard times and might otherwise not have celebrated the holiday. The event was flawless and fun. Special thanks to Picasso's staff who donated their time. Double the special thanks to resident Don Samburg for organizing the event. You know you had a very successful event when parents and children are tear-eyed and hugging you as they depart.

Picasso's collects for the hungry. Picasso's sponsored a food drive where a discount was given if food was donated. Terry Pingel offered to "Double" each donation with a donation of his own. Unfortunately for Terry several boxes of food were donated forcing him to take a field trip to Cosco to settle up his offer.

Support for the Winfield Community Foundation with a Kentucky Derby Party. The event was held at Picasso's and raised a significant amount of funds for the Winfield Community Foundation. The event featured a raffle, silent auction, best hat contest, food, drinks, and of course the great Kentucky Derby race on Picasso's big screen TV. The space for the event was donated by Picasso's Restaurant. Doubletree Resident Annette Williamson organized the event. Annette put forth several hours and days of her time to make the event successful. Special "kudos" to Annette for pulling it off and raising funds for our community foundation, making life better for the community.

This was only a drop in the bucket of how charitable and caring the residents of Doubletree can be. Be proud of your community and keep in mind the guard house is a designated "drop zone" for canned goods. These goods will be delivered to the food pantry on a weekly basis.

2010 - A Year of Special Doubletree Events
Breakfast with Santa was sponsored by the new santa giftDoubletree Special Events committee. The event featured breakfast for kids, parents, and grandparents with a special visit from the man himself "Santa". Each had ample time to take pictures and visit with Santa.

Valentines Night Dining. Picasso's featured several romantic entrees for love birds on Valentines Day.

St. Patty's Day Corned Beef & Cabbage. Apparently word got around how good the special Corned Beef & Cabbage meal was at Picasso's . Several enjoyed and left with a full belly.

winners of basketsEaster Egg Hunt. An egg hunt was originally planned for the clubhouse lawn. But, mother nature insisted on moving it indoors. So, the eggs were hidden throughout Picasso's. Over 1000 eggs filled with coins and candy. Five of the eggs contained a special gold coin representing a special gift for the lucky finder. These Doubletree kids won special Easter baskets packed with delicious goodies. Thank you to your Doubletree Special Events Committee for organizing the fun-filled day.
Easter Brunch presented by the Doubletree Special Events Committee. A bountiful buffet of all things imaginable was presented on Easter Sunday.

Kentucky Derby Party. derby hatderby hatA special event organized by the Winfield Community Foundation was held at Picasso's. The event raised significant funds for the foundation.

Mother's Day Brunch. As usual Picasso's featured a Mother's Day Brunch. Several moms were treated by their families to a terrific brunch which ended with a special gift for each mom.

Doubletree Garage Sale. In 2010 the Special Events Committee tried something different by organizing the Doubletree Garage Sale coinciding with the Winfield Community Sale. In the end the event was all too successful. The comments received by both Doubletree residents and bargain hunters were terrific. In 2011 the committee is considering "2" garage sales. One in the spring and one in the fall.

catchcatchKids' Fishing Tournament. The Doubletree Lake Committee hosted another Kids' Fishing Tournament in the spring. A combination of great weather and 42 participating kids made the event a huge success. Catfish, bass, and bluegill were caught and released back into the lake. Special thanks to resident Lou Rinaldo and his committee for organizing the event.

racedayWinfield Community Foundation 5k Race thru Doubletree East. The inaugural race was organized as part of the foundation's Octoberfest, later coined "OctoberFAST" by those who attended. The event was perfect and those who participated  had much fun and gave high ratings. Doubletree resident Jim Jungles chaired and organized the event. Doubletree staff donated a tremendous effort to help make the event successful. The residents of Doubletree East showed their support by lining up on the street and cheering on the runners.

Special Events will continue in 2011. Many will be organized by the Special Events Committee chaired by Doubletree resident Deb Laverty. Her committee can use help. Please email tjpingel@doubletreelake.net to get involved.

2010 Accomplishments
Neighborhood Cleanup was a significant concern of the POA in 2010. Several areas were addressed during the year.

Eyesores addressed. After several months of effort by the developer, banks, and contractors two eyesores are now a picturesque relief to the neighborhoods of Doubletree East and Doubletree West.

Doubletree West Entrance face lift. Yes, theDBL West Doubletree West entrance received a much anticipated facelift in 2010. Several upgrades took place including the addition of three red sunset maple trees, several shrubs, ornamental grass, an enlarged plant bed, hardwood mulch, and oversized river rock to replace the old riprap covering the drain. Flagstone was also added. The opposite side of the road mirrors the addition, as well. The evening approach was improved tremendously with the addition of lighting. We all look forward to spring when the new trees and plants are in bloom.

walleyeFish Stocking in Doubletree Lake. Approximately 800 "larger than expected" Walleye were added to Doubletree Lake in 2010. The addition will help maintain proper balance of type and size of fish in the lake. Doubletree resident Josh Elder played a significant part in coordinating the study and stocking of fish.

Contractor Rules. Doubletree Management set forth several rules and requirements for the contractors working in Doubletree. Rules are stickily enforced by the POA. Construction sites shall be maintained, cleaned, and erosion control must be in place. They shall not speed or park on walking areas. They are not to leave material or debris on walking areas. Littering will not be tolerated. Contractors are doing more to stay in compliance and we thank them for this.

House Addresses on Piers. The Lake Committee worked hard to accomplish 100% participation in this effort. All docks should now display the address associated with the homesite. The purpose of this action is to help assist emergency personnel identify a precise location when responding to an emergency.

east entranceEast Entrance Improvement Committee Formed. The Doubletree East Entrance Improvement Committee has met several times in 2010 and is making great progress. A plan has been formulated and upgrades will begin in 2011.

Lake Testing. Lake testing resulted in an A+ rating for 2010. The lake was clean and safe the entire year. Testing will continue in 2011.

Neighborhood Cleanup. The Doubletree maintenance department has put a lot of effort into cleaning up our neighborhood. 2010 met us with some unexpected challenges with several homes and sites left in disarray. The maintenance department addressed these messes and made them easier on the eyes. Good job maintenance dept.
Changes Came with Challenges in 2010
Many changes took place in Doubletree in 2010.

Changing of the Guard. The major changes in the security department were met with a lot of emotion. It was a difficult change to make considering the quality and significants of personnel that was in place. The change was a proactive attempt by the Doubletree POA Board of Directors to deliver a more unified, secure, and financially sound security department. The decision in favor of the change was made after several months of deliberation and fact-finding. In the end the right decision was made. The Doubletree community has benefited in many ways. Patrol has increased. Covenant compliance has increased tremendously. Professionalism has taken a priority and service rarely questioned.

Return of the Security Committee. With the change in security came the return of the Security Committee. The committee, chaired by Doubletree West resident Tom Sperka, meets monthly to discuss security issues and to offer thoughts, ideas, and solutions to certain security issues. The committee also performs the duty of infraction grievances. Anyone wishing to argue a ticket is heard in person by this committee of residents.

Board of Directors appoints New Member. The Doubletree Board of Directors welcomed the appointment of west resident Marty Adams to the POA Board. He has been a valuable part of the board in 2010. Thank you for your service, Marty.

New POA Manager Appointed. With the departing of Ron Johnson for a new career challenge the POA Board appointed Terry Pingel to the position of POA Manager. The POA manager's duties include organization of maintenance, security, and other important factors of the neighborhood.
In the News
What made the news that directly impacted Doubletree?

NO Apartments. In 2010 the area of 109th and C.L. Road was proposed for apartments and condos. A local contractor made a proposal to Winfield and was met with a strong and eager "No thanks" which put an end to the idea.

Winfield Struggles with Police Protection. There was a lot of discussion and press regarding the town's struggle with policing Winfield. During this struggle it was reported that the Lake County Sheriff would discontinue policing the town until an agreement was reached. The Doubletree POA recognized the situation directly affected Doubletree's neighborhoods and increased patrols in an effort to stay visible and offer the best security services possible during this time. The disagreement was eventually resolved and police protection seems to be active in Winfield once again.

New I-65 interchange opens at 109th. A convenient option to fighting the US 30 traffic is now in place. It also offers a more visible advertisement to those seeking a great place to live; Winfield, Indiana.

Parking Ban approved in Winfield. The Winfield town council adopted a ordinance prohibiting resident parking on many town streets.

Chamber of Commerce takes a strong stand promotingbillboard Winfield. A billboard was placed at US 30 promoting Winfield as a place with excellent schools, solid home values, and low taxes. Doubletree's Developer helped fund the project.
The Year Ahead
So, what's in store for the year ahead. Some issues are new. Some have been been the topic of dicussion for a while.

Doubletree Parks. This is one of those items that have been discussed for a long period. Deserving. So, what's next? Are we going to see parks in 2011. The answer from Doubletree's developer, Randy Minas, is.. well.. "maybe". Not exactly the perfect answer. But, Doubletree's developer wants to see parks in Doubletree as much as any resident. A park makes marketable sense to selling lots and homesites. He understands this. But, funds are needed and the market continues to impact sales. Randy says he has been in discussion with his financing institution and parks remain near the top on priorities. His plan is to, at the very least, identify and excavate parks in Doubletree West and Doubletree East in 2011. The main infrastructure may need to wait, but, a place to sit, relax, and play is priority.

Doubletree East Entrance Improvement. This improvement is alreadyeast entrance underway. The planning is nearly complete and Doubletree Developers have agreed to fund a majority portion of the project. Although the entrance into Doubletree East doesn't look awful, it doesn't look spectacular either. So, the improvements will begin this year. Planned for the upgrade will be a new monument, sign, and lighting. Landscaping changes will be prominent. Also planned are fountains in the waters next to the entrance.

Road Improvements. Several of our roads are in need of maintenance. This spring the maintenance department will be addressing pot holes and areas needing sealing. A special fund was assessed to Doubletree East residents for 2011. This fund will help repair and replace curbs, roads, and infrastructure in the future.

More Special Events. The Doubletree Special Events Committee will continue to host many special events this year. Planned are Valentines Day, St. Patty's, Back to School, Mother's Day, Garage Sales, Lobstah Nights, Easter Egg Hunts, and so much more. The lake committee will also continue to organize the Kids' fishing tourney and other events.

Boat Parade & Fireworks Display. The Lake committee is discussing the possibility of holding an Independence Day weekend boat parade and fireworks display. The committee will be asking for sponsorship to fund this event. Stay tuned.

Sales and Future Development. Yes, sales. Sales must improve to move forward with plans for improvements and parks. The developer will be marketing Doubletree with every resource possible. Another phase of improvements in planned for 2011. The plan is to complete the street around the lake and open the rear entrance. Doubletree's plan is to begin the process this summer.

The Future of Picasso's Restaurant & Lounge
A message from Terry Pingel.
As many of you know I publish your newsletter on a monthly basis. I am also your POA manager and the Developer's Real Estate Salesperson. For several years I have passed the doors of Picasso's as I entered the upstairs offices. For years I wondered why Picasso's sat empty and unused by the community. Eventually, after hearing so many of you ask the same question I asked myself "why not you". So, being that I organized a restaurant management company and opened Picasso's to the residents and public. So, today, I rent the space from the owners of the building. They do not have interest in the restaurant operations you see today. I guess what I am saying is that Picasso's is operated by a separate entity and not Doubletree's developers or the POA. The idea of opening was partially a business decision and partially for the residents of Doubletree. Please utilize it. The restaurant has gone thru several challenges and I believe we have found solid footing for 2011. You will not find a better meal for the price. The atmosphere is great and the bar welcoming. Service is a priority. Give it a try and support the several staff members that make it happen. Your involvement as a patron is absolutely crucial to keeping the restaurant open for many years. Use your discount cards. Tell your friends. Picasso's is the best restaurant within 5 miles. Take advantage of it and keep it operating.
