Holiday Lighting in Full Swing

lights house 1With the holiday season now fully in swing you can feel and see the effects that the season is having in Doubletree. Numerous homes are beautifully decorated and individuals visiting our community have been greeted with variations of festive warmth created by colors and lights.

As you can imagine we have come a long way since Thomas Edison invented the light bulb in 1879 which then allowed for some of the first Christmas tree lights to illuminate just three years later. Christmas tree lighting went mainstream in 1895 when the White House threw the switch on their first electronically lighted tree. For those of you watching your electric meters the cost of lighting a tree in 1895 cost about $300 which would equate to almost $2,000 today. Who knew what a bargain we would see 100 years later.

Winter Weather Advice
Another winter is upon us and the great weather we had this summer will be long forgotten as frigid temperatures along with snow and ice converge on NWI. It's a beautiful and fun time of the year but it also has its bad points. Winter can present hazardous road and health conditions. Here are some quick tips in regards to some of the issues we could all be facing this winter.

Driving Safety Tips
I must have been stranded as a child or something because I always take these precautions for myself and my family. During the winter months keep your gas tank full to prevent ice from building up in the gas tank and fuel lines. We have all ben stuck on I-65 and 80/94 at one time or another. Place extra weight weight in your truck, especially for those of us that have rear wheel drive. Pack a small winter survival kit in your car in case you become stranded. This is not hard to do and would include a few extra blankets, flashlight, small first-aid kit, some non-perishable foods, some old warm clothing, and even some booster cables. This would allow you to not only help yourself but to help someone else that could be stranded. Always try to have your cell phone available. You holiday shoppers should not worry about your truck space as this will only take up a small portion of it.

Snow Shoveling Tips
Ok, so I don't like to shovel snow. I did enough of it when I was a kid, but the reality of the situation is that I will occasionally have to do pick up the shovel. What I do know is that it is and can be very difficult depending upon the amount of wetness. Be sure to take it slow and pace yourself with rest breaks while doing it to avoid over exertion. When lifting, use your legs and not your back. If you feel any type of pain - Stop. Wear warm clothing. Try to have a Weather Alert Radio in you home (small price and sold at Walgreens). When all else fails.. Call you neighbors for help.

Winfield Notes and Quotes
If your new to the area and need to know what we have available in Winfield take a moment and visit the Winfield Chamber of Commerce Website at www.winfieldchamber.com. A full listing of government and community links are available along with a listing of the members which include almost any type of service provider or store you would or could need locally. Did you know that we have over 8 restaurants available to us with our own Picasso's quickly becoming the local favorite.

As a side note Bill Stack was just elected President of the Winfield Chamber of Commerce with our own Terry Pingel of Doubletree being elected Vice President for 2010. Most of you are well aware of this as Terry has been active with the Chamber along with adding support and guidance for many projects in Winfield. Take a moment and congratulate Terry when you see him.

"You're only one of two things in the this world. You're either part of the problem or part of the solution. You choose what part you are going to play".

Happy Holidays!
Coyote Alert & Advice

wileThe Doubletree POA received a recent report of a Coyote sighting in our neighborhood. Immediately upon receiving this report a call was placed to the Department of Natural Resources in an effort to not only report the sighting but to gain knowledge of the potential danger of a wild animal roaming the area. During this call we learned that coyotes are plentiful in NW Indiana and known to reside and wonder in wooded areas (even in occupied subdivisions). It was stated that coyotes are "leery of man" and really want to be left alone. But, the person we spoke to advised not to leave small animals outside unattended as they may be considered easy prey by a hungry coyote.
POA Announcements

Please do not use construction dumpsters to dispose of your debris. Contractors in Doubletree request that you refrain from dumping garbage, furniture, and xmas trees in construction dumpsters.

Parking on streets in Doubletree is a violation. Please keep vehicles off the streets and in driveways or garages. Parking on the streets during the winter makes it difficult for snowplows to clear snow.

Do not dump leaves or other debris in empty lots. Leaves are dangerous to the chemical balance of the lake. Dumping leaves now will have an effect in the spring.

The POA reminds you to continue to clean up after your pet.
