Spring Has Sprung

mowSpring Time Fertilization
Spring time is here, which means many of you will begin the process of caring for your lawns with a spring fertilization. With this, it's important to know how fertilizer can impact the quality of your lake.

The following commentary was submitted in April 2008's newsletter, written by Aquatic Weed Control specialist Jim Donahoe.

The residents of Doubletree are in control of their own destiny in regards to treatment costs of the lake in future years. The main ingredient that causes algae to grow is phosphorous and the residents need to do everything they can to stop phosphorous from entering the lake. Residents need to remember that once phosphorous enters the lake it does not leave it. The higher the rate of phosphorous, the faster the growth of algae in the lake. This is not only important to the people who live on the lake, but to those who live off the lake as well, because all phosphorous use has the potential of running towards it. Sources of phosphorus are lawn fertilizers, decaying grass and leaves, and soaps commonly used in auto washing solutions.

The cost of treating the lake will only increase if phosphorus is not kept from entering it. What can you do??

1. Keep grass clippings off the road so they may not drain into the lake. 2. Use non-phosphorus yard fertilizers and prevent fertilizers from entering the water OR street. 3. When washing cars, keep soap from draining into the street.

When you see the following flags displayed follow these simple rules.

RED FLAG - Lake is closed to all boating and swimming until further notice.

YELLOW FLAG - No Wake from boating and NO swimming permitted.

Committee Reports
Lake Committee by Lou Rinaldo
The Doubletree Lake Committee has recommended a number of changes to the POA which we anticipate will be implemented soon. These recommendations include a Flag Advisory Warning System (see prior article).

We have also created a list of Top 10 Lake Rules to highlight the most important rules of the lake. These rules will be distributed when permits are issued and will also be displayed near the boat ramp.

I'm pleased to announce a Lake Patrol Boat has been purchased and funded by Doubletree Management. We would like to thank developer Randy Minas for bearing the significant cost of this boat.

The Lake Committee will hold a public meeting for Doubletree East residents on May 13th. We encourage all East residents to attend this meeting at the clubhouse to learn more about the issues we address.

In closing, several lake docks were compromised this winter due to ice conditions. Please check the condition of your dock for damages. The lake opens to boating April 1st.
Doubletree Resident's. If you witness anyone dumping construction materials, lawn clippings, concrete washout, or anything else that doesn't belong in a vacant lot or street call security at 947-4440. Together we can keep Doubletree beautiful.

Please remember, property owners are responsible for maintenance and upkeep of lots, whether vacant or not. If your lawn or lot grow beyond what's permitted you risk being fined. If you cannot maintain your lot, contact Doubletree.

Boat Owners. Remember, you absolutely must have registered your boat and received a boat sticker prior to loading your watercraft in the water. No exceptions.
