Back to School Safety Reminders
Guest Commentary by LOFS Fire Chief Kevin Radtke
With the first day of school quickly approaching I would like to see all parents discuss these important safety guidelines with their children.
1. Find an easy way to walk to school or the bus stop. Determine a "safe" route with the fewest number of street crossings possible. Discuss things to "watch out" for when walking to school and always walk with a brother, sister, or friend.
2. Don't talk to strangers!! Don't go anywhere with a stranger!! Don't accept anything from a stranger!! Remember, children often think of a stranger's appearance as mean & scary which is often not the case.
3. Memorize your phone number and address including area code and zip code.
4. Arrive to your bus stop before its due to arrive. Don't rush to catch the bus!!
5. Stand 4 "giant" steps from the curb and make your line to board "away" from the curb.
6. Don't leave anything behind when getting on or off the bus and make sure your backpack is zipped up and no straps are loose potentially getting caught in the door.
7. If you drop something near the bus. Tell the bus driver before retrieving it. Make sure the bus driver "sees" you at all times.
8. If your child is a "latch key" kid make sure he/she calls you immediately upon getting home. Remind your children of the house rules when you're away.
9. Finally.. Do your homework and study hard.
