 Back to School Safety Reminders

RadtkeGuest Commentary by LOFS Fire Chief Kevin Radtke

With the first day of school quickly approaching I would like to see all parents discuss these important safety guidelines with their children.

1. Find an easy way to walk to school or the bus stop. Determine a "safe" route with the fewest number of street crossings possible. Discuss things to "watch out" for when walking to school and always walk with a brother, sister, or friend.

2. Don't talk to strangers!! Don't go anywhere with a stranger!! Don't accept anything from a stranger!! Remember, children often think of a stranger's appearance as mean & scary which is often not the case.

3. Memorize your phone number and address including area code and zip code.

4. Arrive to your bus stop before its due to arrive. Don't rush to catch the bus!!

5. Stand 4 "giant" steps from the curb and make your line to board "away" from the curb.

6. Don't leave anything behind when getting on or off the bus and make sure your backpack is zipped up and no straps are loose potentially getting caught in the door.

7. If you drop something near the bus. Tell the bus driver before retrieving it. Make sure the bus driver "sees" you at all times.

8. If your child is a "latch key" kid make sure he/she calls you immediately upon getting home. Remind your children of the house rules when you're away.

9. Finally.. Do your homework and study hard.

Special Events Committee by Deborah Laverty

Cool off, meet your neighbor at the Ice Cream Social on August 16th from 1-3pm. The Special Events Committee is hosting an old-fashioned ice cream social and back to school party for all Doubletree residents at the Clubhouse. We'll be scooping up some sweet treats and there'll be other surprises for youngsters including a vist from the fire department.

Beautification Committee by Carla Suson

The Beautification Committee spent July re-examining our goals & duties. Further improvement plans are in place but require several more volunteers from the neighborhood. Please contact me at clsuson@gmail.com to volunteer your time to help beautify our neighborhood. Our next meeting is August 11th @ 6pm. Topics will include enhancements of public areas including the Randolph berm, gates and fountain areas. Your suggestions and ideas are appreciated.

Additionally, many of you will soon be weeding down your bulb-based plants for the changing season. Don't throw those extra bulbs away!! Donate them to the Beautification Committee for use in the public areas. Your help and any plants you no longer want may be a perfect way to enhance the community.

Lake Committee by Lou Rinaldo.

The committee is pleased to announce that lake/boater safety complaints declined during the month of July. This is great news!! We encourage you to continue safe boating practices and to stay familiar with the rules of the lake. Also, please continue to report unsafe behavior and unregistered/non-permitted boats to security @ (219) 947-4440.

The Lake Committee will be meeting soon to determine if a second kids' fishing competition would interest the community. If so the event will likely be held in September. Your input is appreciated. Contact Ron Johnson (POA Manager) at rjohnson@doubletreelake.net.

In addition, further discussion with the developer and POA continues regarding additional safety buoys, boat patrol, and fish stocking.
