Reilly C. Bush Foundation Fundraiser

tea girlThe Reilly C. Bush Foundation had a tremendous turnout at the clubhouse on Sunday, May 4th for their first ever Princess Tea.

Over 100 participants came out to enjoy a princess lunch with crafts and entertainment. Each learned about the Kid's Giving Circle, a program designed by the foundation to teach children and their families the importance of philanthropy.

The Foundation's president, Michelle Bush, announced that over $4,000.00 was raised for the Kid's Giving Circle. She wished to thank Randy Minas and his staff for generously donating their time and facilities for this magical event.

Committee Reports

Special Events Committee by Chairperson Deborah Laverty.

Doubletree Lake Estates residents just want to have fun -- That was evident from the discussion at the newly formed special events committee meeting.

We talked about several ideas including a possible community-wide block party featuring music and a grill-off with a prize to the best rib or hamburger recipe.

We also discussed winter-time activities including photos of the kids or grandkids with Santa at Christmas at the clubhouse. Year-round activities we discussed included card game clubs (poker or pinochle) for both men and women and even the possibility of having a book club.

Those residents on the new committee include Rosemary Rinaldo, Colleen Hatami, Michelle Frazier and Jennifer York.

We need more people, particularly those from Doubletree West. Email me if you are interested and I will make sure you know the date of our next meeting. I'd also like your input. deborahlaverty@gmail.com.

Subdivision Beautification Committee by Carla Suson.

The Beautification Committee supported two events during the end of April and beginning of May. The Walk & Talk with the Lake County Extension office was a success and the two experts offered some great advice. The two most pertinent ideas were to get rid of wild rose vines if they are in your yard. Evidently they grow like weeds, have very long thorns and will take over an area if grown unchecked. Also, several yards were having trouble with trees that had been planted by landscapers. The landscapers failed to remove the string and burlap around the root ball, thus not allowing the tree to grow outward and dying. If you have a tree that seems to be in trouble, you may want to clear the dirt around the base and see if there is still string choking it off.

Residents interested in a second "Walk & Talk" may contact me at clsuson@gmail.com.

The second event held was a plant swap. Hopefully this is an event we can hold each year.

We are also planning another "Garden Talk" event. This time on pest control.

Finally, one member of our committee suggested an idea of using rubber tire mulch around your garden instead of wood. It is sold at Home Depot and likely at many garden centers. Although more expensive, rubber mulch does not wash away and last many years longer than wood mulch.

Lake Committee by Lou Rinaldo

The installation of the community dock was completed ahead of the Memorial Day weekend and seems to be getting ample utilization. The buoy safety system will be installed in the next few weeks to mark safe zones at both ends of the lake.

The Lake Committee held a general meeting on May 13th to review initiatives undertaken since being formed in Nov '07. Some excellent suggestions were recommend by residents and will be discussed in future committee meetings.

A number of safety and regulation infractions have been reported recently on the lake, including excessive speeding, boats following too closely, more than two persons riding a tube, boats traveling in the wrong direction, and operating without State of Indiana registration stickers and Doubletree permits. These infractions could lead to fines or loss of lake privileges for the owners of the boats in question.
Kids Fishing Tournament Draws Big Crowd and Big Fish.

The Lake Committee hosted the first kids' fishing instruction and tournament on June 1st. A total of 18 youngsters ranging from ages 2 to 16 participated in what turned out to be a picture perfect day. The event was attended by about 50 people including parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends. About 60 fish were reeled in by the children. The biggest fish of the day was reeled in by 9 year old Tyler Cher, who landed a whopping 14-3/4" bass. Each catch created great excitement for the kids, many of whom where fishing for their first time.

Lake Committee members and residents Josh Elder, Bill Williams, and Lou Rinaldo did a great job instructing, judging, and organizing the event. The criteria for determining the winner was the 'longest fish' would win. Much excitement was created when 6 yr old Matthew Black landed a big one with under a minute to go in the competition.

The winners of the two age groups were as follows;

Kids ages 9 to 16: 1st place Tyler Cher ($60). 2nd place Nick Maggio ($40). 3rd place Clayton Follmar ($20).

Kids ages 8 and under: 1st place Matthew Black ($60). 2nd place Nicole Lirian ($40). 3rd place Alyssa Hoover ($20).

Ice Cream coupons to North Star were provided by Barbara Baert . McDonalds gift certs and prize money were donated by thoughtful Doubletree resident who wished to remain anonymous.

Randy Minas and the Doubletree team provided ample tasty snacks and refreshments and the leftovers were donated to a local charity.

Based on the favorable response by the residents the Lake Committee has announced it will consider hosting another tournament event in September.
