Dear Resident:

Welcome to the 3rd monthly issue of the Doubletree Lake Estates Newsletter. Our "email" mailing list has reached over 150 residents. Eventually we hope to have each residents email address and will continue to encourage those who have not signed up for the newsletter to do so. So, ask your neighbors and friends if they're receiving regular emails from Doubletree. If not, you can forward this newsletter to them by clicking "forward email" at the bottom of this page and they can "sign up" for future publications.

Thank you for all the comments, suggestions, and thoughtful words regarding our newsletter. It can only keep getting better and better with your input.

Sincerely,
Terry Pingel

Important Lawn Fertilization Guidelines              lawn

This months lead article was submitted by Jim Donahoe, Aquatic Weed Control.

The residents of Doubletree are in control of their own destiny in regards to treatment cost of the lake in future years. The main ingredient that causes algae to grow is phosphorous and the residents need to do everything they can to stop phosphorous from entering the lake. Residents need to remember that once phosphorous enters the lake it does not leave it. The higher the rate of phosphorous, the faster the growth of algae in the lake. This is not only important to the people who live on the lake, but to those who live off the lake as well, because all phosphorous use has the potential of running towards it. Sources of phosphorus are lawn fertilizers, decaying grass and leaves, and soaps from washing your car.

The cost of treating the lake will only increase if phosphorus is not kept from entering it.

What you can do!!

1. Keep grass clippings off the road so they may not drain into the lake.
2. Use non-phosphorus yard fertilizers and prevent fertilizers from entering the water or street.
3. When washing cars, keep soap from draining into the street.

POA Committee Notes:
Reports from the POA Committees

Subdivision Beautification Committee: by Committee Leader Carla Suson
Back by popular demand the Yard of the Month selections will resume soon. In addition we are busy making plans for spring and summer events to support gardening in Doubletree. The first of these was a lecture on March 29th by Nikky Witkowski of the Purdue Extension Service. Future events being planned include Ms. Witkowski hosting a Walk & Talk event to answer individual home owners' questions regarding their plantings. Sign up sheets will be available soon. We also hope to sponsor a plant exchange at the end of April. Additionally, as the weather warms, we will be looking for candidates for Garden of the Month awards. You may contact me at clsuson@gmail.com if you would like to nominate yours or a neighbors exemplary gardening efforts.

Lake Committee: by Committee Leader Lou Rinaldo
Several proposed initiatives are in the final phase of implementation by the Lake Committee. Discussion items: A loading dock to be installed adjacent the boat ramp for the benefit of off-lake boaters. Parking will be permitted on a temporary basis within the cul-de-sac of White Water Court. Safe zones are being examined within areas of the lake for "wake free" fishing, swimming, etc. Buoys are planned to identify the safe zones as well as a dividing line to direct the flow of skiing on the lake. Skiing hours will be extended by two hours during two weekdays. These days will be either Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Fri. A lake patrol will also be implemented this coming season to periodically monitor safe boating practices. We are also evaluating adding lake vegetation to improve the ecological balance of the lake as well as improve water quality. In closing, I encourage boaters to get their permits early to help fund these key initiatives which have been approved and generously subsidized by the developer.

Security Committee: by Chief Margie McCarthy
With the seasons changing and the weather warming it's important to remind ourselves of a few things. First and foremost we should remember that our children are outside playing again and our driving habits need to adjust. Being a parent myself, you can tell your kids to "stay out of the road" until you're blue in the face, and yet as soon as you turn your back... This is why we need to slow down, stop at stop signs, and keep a watchful eye while driving. Our security department takes the safety of children very seriously and irresponsible driving within Doubletree will not be tolerated. I've instructed our security personnel to write tickets, not warnings, to speeders and stop sign violators in an effort to keep our children safe. In addition, walking paths will be seeing more and more use as the weather warms. Please remember parking is not permitted on the paths. If you see a vehicle on the path, feel free to call us and we'll address it. Have a safe spring.
