March/2008
Welcome to Issue #2 of the Doubletree Newsletter.

Greetings!

Issue #1 was a great success. Thank you for reading and sending your comments.
Keep Off the Ice!! horse
We asked Chief Radtke of the LOFS Fire Force to write this issue's leading article. His suggestion was to address the dangers of an iced covered lake.

By LOFS Fire Chief Kevin Radke
Each winter Doubletree's ponds & lake freeze over and many of us question, "Is the ice safe?". The answer is ice is never really safe. Ice can be eight inches thick on one end of the lake and just 1/2 inch on the other. There are also several factors that can weaken ice rapidly. Duck Holes are places in the ice where it never freezes completely due to ducks or geese taking turns swimming around to keep the water from freezing. Aerators in ponds will also keep enough water moving to avoid complete freezing. Even fish can weaken ice by congregating in the same small area causing a warming of the water in that general location. In addition, Doubletree is a natural spring lake which can create movement of water beneath the ice causing weakness.

Every year the Four Seasons Fire Department responds to emergency calls for animals that have fallen through the ice. We take these calls for help seriously and will respond. I cannot stress enough that if your pet falls through the ice, do not go out to save them. Dial 911. If the ice was not strong enough to support your dog, then it isn't going to support you either. Again, always dial 911. We have extensive training and equipment to allow us to make the rescue in a safe manner.

"When in doubt,don't go out!"

Results of POA Questionnairereport
We have tallied up the results of the POA Questionnaire sent out in December. Here is a summary of the results.
  • 40% of those responding have been residents for between 1-3 years.
  • Over 1/2 of those responding have not yet visited www.doubletreelake.net.
  • When asked if resident would like to join a committee over 70% did not answer.
  • Other committees recommended by survey takers: Welcoming, Special Events, and Retirement committees.
  • When asked what amenities or features were most desired "Parks" was the most popular. The second most received response was "Improved Entrances".
  • When asked for suggestions to improve Doubletree, "improved enforcement of covenants", "improved security", and "improved snow removal" were of the three most popular responses.

Doubletree is committed to addressing what the community wants. Watch further issues for more.

Committee Notes:

Subdivision Beautification Committee
by Committee Leader Carla Suson
This month's meeting was very positive. The Committee discussed the formation of the ARC Verification Committee and the different issues it needs to consider when verifying completed construction of a home. There was some discussion on the overall look of the subdivision and several things to accomplish. We discussed plans for upcoming "fun" projects for the residents including scheduling guest speakers on gardening and a charity plant sale. Watch your newsletter for those upcoming events.

Security Committee
by POA Security Chief Margie McCarthy
The Security and Grievance Committees will be meeting quarterly going forth. I would like to see a greater attendance by the members with this new schedule. Please remember that ice fishing is not permitted on Doubletree Lake. Also, snowmobiles and ATV's are restricted in Doubletree as well. The guards would like to extend their appreciation for all the goodies delivered to them during the holidays. Even if it meant putting on a couple pounds. Stay safe!

Lake Committee
by Committee Leader Lou Rinaldo
The Lake Committee is proposing to Doubletree a illuminated buoy safety system. The system identifies "safe zones" as well as appropriate skiing guidelines. The DNR is available to help us with the locations of these buoys. Skiing times may also be extended this coming season. There will be a fish stocking proposal. The purpose of this proposal is to help control and maintain an adequate balance of fish. There will be a dock designed for the new boat ramp, too. We are also looking into implementing a boat patrol program. The committee is investigating introducing lake vegetation to maintain the ecological balance of the lake and to help with quality and clarity of the water.

Special Events Committee
Coming Soon!!

Garden Talk. flowerWhat to Do & When. Everyone is invited to "Garden Talk", a lecture on preparing gardens on Saturday, March 29th @ 2pm at the Doubletree Clubhouse. The event, sponsored by the Subdivision Beautification Committee will feature a representative from the Lake County Extension Services. The speaker will cover gardening tips and the best times to plant trees, shrubbery, and flower plants. If interest is high enough, the Beautification Committee hopes to extend this into a series of lectures throughout the spring. Refreshments will be provided.
