How to Plan a Staycation to Remember
From Team JAB Why travel outside state (or even county) lines when planning your next getaway? With all South Florida has to offer, it's easy to take a relaxing break without the stress of airplanes or road trips. Below are a few ideas to plan the perfect staycation. Just remember, the key to a staycation is acting like you're on vacation!
Come Up With a Plan
You may not even realize the attractions and activities available within an hour's drive. Visit the Miami or Florida tourism websites for ideas. Be sure to plan a mix of passive activities, like seeing a play or movie, and active adventures, like hiking or biking - just like if you were on a far away vacation. Pretend You're Somewhere Else
Choose experiences which are nearby, but give you the feeling of being far away. Explore ethnic neighborhoods, find unique shops and distinctive foods. Sunbathe on a beach with a refreshing cocktail in hand. Or get out on the water, on a sightseeing excursion, airboat ride, or even in a kayak, offers a relaxing departure from the everyday routine.
Act Like You're on Vacation
Wake up late. Take a break from housework and cooking, and hold off on errands like supermarket shopping and oil changes. Send postcards to friends and family from the local sites you visit. Take pictures to post and brag about on social media channels, and to later display in a scrapbook. To read about some more staycation ideas, click HERE. |
Road Warriors
From Team JAB Are you hitting the road this summer? Whether you're traveling alone, with your significant other, or the kids, here are some snack ideas designed for easy access - and most importantly, to steer you away from fast food stops along the way.
-Mini pita snackwiches. Hummus is full of protein and can help keep your hunger at bay until you reach your destination. Put some into mini pitas pockets with shredded carrots or sliced cucumbers for crunch. These mini hummus sandwiches make the perfect portable snack that the kids will love too!
-Popcorn sprinkled with Parmesan cheese or hot chili peppers. A delicious snack that's filling with minimal calories.
-Top a yogurt with some crushed cereal or granola. This will give you a solid dose of calcium, and although a little more challenging to eat in the car, you can make it work by placing the yogurt in your cup holder.
-String cheese. It's easy and packs a punch of calcium. Plus, it's fun to peel.
-Energy or granola bars. Skip the candy bar and boost your protein and fiber intake with this healthy pick-me-up.
-Carrots. A crisp snack for the car that provides vitamins and taste.

Rain, Rain Go Away!
From Team JAB By now we can all expect for the Miami weather to be unpredictable in the summer months. But it doesn't change the fact that rainy weather can really throw off your plans, especially when it comes to the little ones. What are you to do on those wet and dreary days? Fear not, here are a few ideas:
Hit the Town
Local museums offer a great way to keep the kids busy and out of the rain.
Roll With the Flow
Hit the bowling alley! Bowling is a fun indoor activity that will provide hours of entertainment.
Build a Fort
Use pillows and blankets to build a special fort in your living room - for kids only. Then let their imaginations run wild while they play in their own world.
Swim Like a Fish
Fill up the tub, slip your munchkin into their bathing suit, fill the bath with toys and let them go to town. No sunscreen required.
Game Time
Check out a local arcade or game facility. You can have a much-needed break while the kids can challenge each other at all the latest games.
Park It
Who says the park is off limits? Many offered covered playgrounds that can be used during the rain. Just stay away if it's lightning and thundering.
Get Crafty Lay down some newspaper, gather up the construction paper, scissors, markers, crayons and glitter and let the little ones go to town.
Showtime Recruit your older kids to create an impromptu play or dance recital.

Try Something New! From Team JAB Next time you head to the beach, take a chance and try paddleboarding (or SUP as the experts call it). It's fun, easy and the whole family can do it! It even offers an amazing full body workout - all while enjoying amazing views of the water. Almost all of the beaches in Miami (Matheson Hammock, Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, etc.) offer rentals so it's a breeze to grab a board and get paddling. Here are a few tips to get started:
-Always hold the paddle from the top of the handle. Lots of people always want to hold the paddle like a broomstick with both hands on the shaft. Don't do it! Always grab it from the top handle with one hand and the other on the shaft. -Keep your feet parallel and spread shoulder with apart. Everyone wants to get in a surf stance and it makes paddling on the flat water ten times harder and you will fall. Save your surf stance for the surf and keep your feet parallel with toes pointed toward the nose. -Make sure your grip on the paddle is shoulder width apart. Short grips will give you a powerless stroke. -Dip the blade fully in the water and take a long stroke letting your large back muscles do the work. Many people put the full brunt of the stroke on the arms. Let the big back muscles do the brunt of the work. For more tips, click HERE. |
Cool Down with a Refreshing Treat
From Team JAB The summer heat is beating down so why not settle in with an icy bowl of goodness. And with mangoes in full bloom, this tasty treat is sure to cool you down while getting a healthy dose of fresh fruit.
Mango Shaved Ice Ingredients
3 ripe mangoes (peeled, seeded, and cut into chunks)
1/4 cup fresh lime juice
3 tablespoons superfine sugar
Directions
Puree mango chunks in a blender or food processor until very smooth. Add lime juice and sugar. Pulse to combine. Pour into a shallow flat baking dish or pan that will fit easily in your freezer. Freeze until frozen through, about two hours, stirring every half hour to break up the ice crystals. Scrape with a fork and serve.
