An Illustrated Glossary of Plant Pests

with emphasis on Hawaii plant diseases and selected insects

When attempting to communicate with one another about plant pest problems, it is important to share a common vocabulary. Here we provide a list of approximately 210 terms. Each link opens a page that displays the definition of the term, the etymology or origin of the word or term, and some pertinent photographs to help illustrate the term. Some terms have further discussion added to the page. Several terms lack photographs.

Thus, this bulletin links to approximately 210 pages of information I developed in 2007.

This is a "work in progress" and is under review. All of the definitions are correct, however there may be a few typographical errors or a photograph or two that may be less appropriate than desirable for the most accurate illustration of the term.

Several colleagues allowed me to use their photos, in particular I wish to thank Wayne Nishijima for his photographs, and also Fred Brooks, J. B. Friday, Russell Messing, Wayne Borth, Michael DuPonte and John Hu. Most of the photographs are from my own collection.
