Kurt Elling puts the Brill in brilliant!
Kurt's tenth album, 1619 Broadway - The Brill Building Project, is out and available nearly everywhere. This eleven-track collection features renditions of classic songs that came out of the world-famous Brill Building. Jazz writers are already raving about 1619 Broadway. "Kurt Elling has few peers in the realm of male jazz vocals where sheer inventiveness and muscularity are concerned. Elling's facility is one so great and his musical vision so clear that, at least for the time being, no one can touch him. He further establishes himself as the preeminent vocalist with the ambitious and successful 1619 Broadway: The Brill Building Project." ~ AllAboutJazz.com
"This recording reminds us again why Elling remains among the most highly-regarded vocalists of his generation, simply by maintaining the integrity and standards we've come to expect in his work." ~ The Jazz Page
"Singer Kurt Elling's string of gems continues." ~ Ken Franckling's Jazz Notes
"Kurt Elling celebrates the Brill building's pop-song heyday with a beautifully crafted, razor-edged mix of bittersweet ballads, reconfigured doo-wop and upgraded soul." ~ The Financial Times
"Kurt Elling puts the Brill in brilliant." ~ TheJazzBreakfast.com
Kurt's fans are also sharing their delight in the Forum on Kurt's website, on his Facebook page, and in very positive customer reviews on Amazon and iTunes. Please give us a shout and let us know what you think!

Short Takes
Kurt's September 30th interview on WBAI's "Everything Old Is New Again" with host David Kenney is available as an audio podcast through October 13. Kurt's segment begins at about 1:09, starting with "I'm Satisfied" from 1619 Broadway. Their 20-minute conversation closes with "Pleasant Valley Sunday." Kurt Elling performs the haunting "River Man," by the late English singer-songwriter Nick Drake, on Lee Ritenour's newest album for Concord, Rhythm Sessions. "I kept hearing Kurt's voice for this tune, and it ended up being a perfect fit," says Ritenour, who plays guitar on the track along with Kurt, keyboardist Dave Grusin, bassist Nathan East, and drummer Will Kennedy. "When you dig a little deeper into the accompaniment behind Kurt's voice, you hear a beautifully arranged track. It surrounds him in all the right ways. I feel like it has the quality of a modern standard." For Kurt's latest from the road and snaps of the quirky, intriguing stuff that catches his eye, follow kurtelling on Instagram! Not on Instagram? Your Moment of Elling . . .
Jazz is sort of the ultimate welcoming art form in terms of pulling other elements into it and allowing other elements to inform. In recognizing and capturing the specifics of a situation, we come to own it, to cherish it and to be able to give it away.
