1619 Broadway - The Brill Building The Brill Building at 1619 Broadway (on the NW corner of Broadway & 49th Street) is just north of Times Square in mid-town Manhattan.

An eleven-story office building constructed in 1930-31, it was designated a official New York Landmark in 2010.

Kurt's album, 1619 Broadway - The Brill Building Project, honors the locale that the London Telegraph called "the most important generator of popular songs in the Western world." Indeed some consider it the most famous music address in the world.

For a full description of the Brill Building's history, its Art Deco architecture, and cultural significance to the music industry, the official submission to the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission will tell you everything you want to know - and more!

For more about the "Brill Building Sound" check out the very cool Spectropop Brill Building page.

The 1619 Broadway Fall Tour

The Kurt Elling Quintet, featuring Kurt's long-time collaborator, arranger, musical director, and pianist and Laurence Hobgood, along with Clark Sommers on bass, Kendrick Scott on drums, and John McLean on guitar, kick off their 1619 Broadway tour in early October along the west coast of North America and then head east for more great shows.

In November, they take the 1619 Broadway tour to Europe, with additional dates in December.

January finds them back in New York at Birdland and then on The Jazz Cruise in the Carribean, with even more touring in the spring. For Kurt's full touring schedule, please visit the Touring page on his new website.

You're invited to the Gala Release Concerts in New York

As part of Jazz at Lincoln Center's 25th anniversary season, the Gala Release Concerts for 1619 Broadway will be held October 12-13, with two shows each night. The setting is the beautiful Allen Room at Lincoln Center, with its sweeping views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline behind the stage.

Kurt says, "These will be our premiere release concerts for 1619 Broadway, with a full compliment of horns and special guests. Consider making the trip to New York to help us celebrate!"

And finally, we remember
Von Freeman.

1619 Broadway - The Brill Building

October 3, 1923 - August 11, 2012

Legendary Chicago tenor saxophonist, Earle Lavon Freeman, Sr. - also known as Von and Vonski - performed on Kurt's first album, Close Your Eyes, and later on Live in Chicago.  Von Freeman was honored as one of five 2012 NEA Jazz Masters, the highest honor in jazz in America.

Von Freeman died in Chicago on August 11, 2012.  He was 88.

Kurt remembers his dear friend:

"Von Freeman was a Chicago original, an American master. He taught those of us lucky enough to spend time with him everything, from what kinds of tunes to play, how to play them, how to dress, how to stand, how to know when you'd had enough to drink, how to lead a band and a crowd in the experience of jazz joyfulness - essentially everything it takes to be a jazz musician.

"He did this by his raucous, burly and elegant example. And he did it all free of charge. All you had to do was show up, show respect and love the music. I consider Von the chief personal reason I have chosen to and have been able to become a jazz musician. I owe him my vocation in life."

Chicago jazz writer Neil Tesser knew Von Freeman for 40 years and remembered him with these heartfelt reflections on Von's passing.

Remembering Saxophone Hero Von Freeman - Part 1
Von Freeman: last thoughts (for now) on a Chicago original

Kurt's vocalese on "I Like the Sunrise" (Nightmoves) is an adaptation of a Rumi poem set over a Von Freeman solo from Frreman's 2002 album, The ImprovisorWatch Kurt's exquisite performance on the French arts television program, One Shot Not, and listen to the lyrics as you reflect on Vonski's life, art, and heart. Von's in that place where everything is music and singing, where his spirit flies in and out of hearts - everywhere.
Don't worry about saving this music / or be scared if the singing ends

or the piano breaks a string / for we have fallen to a place where everything is
music and singing / everything is recovered and new / ever new and musical
and even if the whole world's harp should burn up / there would still be hidden there
the spirit of song there to linger on / and even if a candle's blown out by wind the fire smolders on in an ember and then sparks again / the singing is a drop / just a drop in oceans of seas / grace keeps it moving through bodies like these

and the sound of a life sends an echoing out / the poem sings willingly in each newborn's crying shout / but it's growing slowly / and keeps many secrets / stop the words and listen / feel the echo of it starting / open a space in the center of your beating heart

and let spirits fly in and out

Requiescat in pace et in amore, Vonski.

  Eighth notes Short Takes

Kurt performs "River Man" on Lee Ritenour's newest album, Rhythm Sessions
, to be released September 25 on the Concord label.

@CriticalJazz said, "'River Man' is a tune written by the late English singer-songwriter Nick Drake and fits Elling's style as though it were originally written for him."

The Laurence Hobgood Quartet, featuring the great Ernie Watts on saxophone, will be at the Blue Whale in Los Angeles, Sept. 22.

On September 27-28,
Laurence Hobgood and poet Robert Pinsky bring their acclaimed POEMJAZZ
to Oberon on the fringe of Harvard Square, in Cambridge, MA.

Laurence plays while Robert reads -- in a spontaneous, unfolding, improvised musical conversation. Robert says he hopes to be surprised each time they perform together.

This month Reid Kennedy's year-long Transcription Project leads off with Kurt's gifted new drummer, Kendrick Scott.

The Transcription Project offers weekly transcriptions and reference recordings on time keeping, grooves, comping, and solos from a featured drummer each month. Kendrick is the very first!

To bring the KEQ to a stage near you

Kurt and Laurence are on the road about 200 nights a year. They only perform where they've been invited (by people who write checks!) and they don't get to set their own itinerary.

To hear Kurt and the band play in your city, region, or country, please ask your favorite jazz clubs or festivals to book them through Kurt's booking agency, IMN (International Music Network). Thank you!

whose work is contemporary
and futurist in orientation,
but brings the past along
