Kurt Elling
"...dazzling hipness when he sings" -- John Fordham, The Guardian (UK)
| August 2010
|
Photo Credit: (c) Alessandra Freguja | The Kurt Elling Quintet, featuring special guest John McLean on guitar, had a most excellent time touring Europe! They played 17 shows in 12 cities in 10 countries, delighting fans and making many new friends. Highlights:Jazzwise Magazine declared his London performance " a dazzling smorgasbord of scat, vocalese, poetry and stream of consciousness."Singer Elling's Quintet artfully mixed tempo, texture and temperature across two wide-ranging sets, from a swinging 'Steppin' Out' and a lustrous 'You Are Too Beautiful' to a statuesque 'My One and Only Love' and revitalised 'Nature Boy', the latter characterised by vertiginous leaps from the chest voice to falsetto.
A stunning take on 'Norwegian Wood', which enfolded 'Man in Space' (a poem by former US poet laureate, Billy Collins) as its startling centrepiece, offered a tantalising foretaste of Elling's next release The Gate.
Watch Kurt and the band perform a hot version of Samurai Hee Haw at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, a few days before the final match of the World Cup. Listen to Kurt's radio interview (05:26) just after his performance at the Ghent Jazz Festival. Listen to Kurt's radio interview (07:10) with Gary King in London. |
