Kurt Elling
Thanks for your continuing enthusiasm and support. Thanks for being open to what we do - for sticking with us, really listening to us, and for really believing in what we're trying to do.

Thanks for coming out and showing up and being present with us and the music.  That's the real gift we share together.

My hope is that each of you has more things in your life to be thankful for than you can put into words and that the gifts and blessings of your lives are overflowing.

Stay tuned - more to come!

Postcards from Down Under

Greetings from Sydney postcardABC National Radio Australia recorded Kurt's performances at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival on Sunday night, 31 October.  Mal Stanley, the host of Jazztrack, will broadcast the show at a later date, probably over two weekends.

Jazztrack is the longest-running national jazz program in Australia.  It's broadcast Saturday and Sunday, 5:05 pm - 7:00 pm in Australia, and repeated Tuesday and Wednesday at 2:00 pm and 9:00 pm.  Shows are archived for two weeks for your listening pleasure.

As soon as it's available, the broadcast time will be posted on Kurt's Facebook page and in the KE Forum, along with handy time conversions so you won't miss a beat.  Stay tuned . . .

The day after Wangaratta Jazz, John McBeath wrote about it in The Age (Australia):

The festival headline star, American vocalist Kurt Elling, was reserved for the closing performance on Sunday night. Elling appeared at Wangaratta in 1998 and has gone from strength to strength since.

He sang some lesser known standards in his supremely professional style, sounding at times like a combination of Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr but with an added high-energy scat ability. It was a great performance involving comedy, consummate musicianship and adept jazz phrasing at any tempo.

Kurt & Laurence radio interview:  On Saturday, 23 October, Kurt and Laurence were interviewed on Andrew Ford's The Music Show on ABC National Radio, Australia. Kurt has been Andrew Ford's guest in the past.

The interview kicks off with "A Poetic Jazz Memory" from Kurt's Grammy-winning Dedicated to You. They talk about John Coltrane, Johnny Hartman, the original Coltrane-Hartman album, and what it was like for Kurt and Laurence to do their creative reimaginings of those songs. Laurence talks about arranging, and Kurt touches briefly on one of his new projects, Frank Sinatra in Paris. The segment closes with Kurt and Laurence performing a short version of "You Are Too Beautiful" live in the studio.

Perfect Present - Kurt Elling on Being in the Moment, by Roger Mitchell, for Ausjazz Blog and Melbourne's Herald Sun, October 26, 2010.

The Grammy award-winning vocalist has made a rigorous study of the great jazz singers and strives for total engagement with music through improvisation and spontaneity. He has mastered scatting, singing and writing vocalese lyrics for jazz standards and current repertoire. He can sing a beautiful ballad and he knows how to touch people's hearts. His lyrics are sensitive and intelligent.

Elling will be a big drawcard at Wangaratta Jazz, having built a strong Australian following since his first appearance at the festival in 1998.

He clearly has the discipline as well as the gift of ingenuity with which he says jazz musicians are born. But for him the key to experiencing music, as performer or audience member, is to be "fully present."

Vocal adventurer wants to make friends for jazz, by John Shand, for The Age (Australia), October 27, 2010.

''I think that we can present some pretty challenging stuff to people in a way that I hope is endearing; challenging in a way that moves them emotionally and isn't just an exercise in intellectualism,'' Elling says.

Continuing to experiment would seem basic for any artist, yet many settle for safety. Elling has expanded jazz singing in the same way that Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter did before him.

Your Moment of Elling . . .

For me, the definition of a successful jazz musician --
the musician I want to be, and the kind of musician I revere
most -- is one who communicates his or her specific intellectual, spiritual and emotional life through articulate, passionate, immediate music.

That's a jazz musician....It is where we find joy.
