April 2010 ~ Touring Dates & News of the New Side!
|
 Hi and Happy Spring!
We've been tracking the new studio recording in New York. Some of the
tracks our faithful friends will have heard us warming up in concerts.
Everything is moving smoothly, and it's been a thrill and a gift to us
to have time with Don Was as a creative partner. We'll be mixing the
tracks in LA in May, once I am done with the second leg of the Monterey
Jazz All-Stars tour.
We have a great many special appearances
coming up meanwhile: - Passion World: Kurt Elling &
Richard Galliano, with Laurence Hobgood, for two nights at Jazz at
Lincoln Center (May 14-15)
- a tremendous night with the Count Basie
Orchestra at the San Francisco Jazz Festival (May 30)
- Laurence leads
his own sextet at the Green Mill (April 30-May 1)
- and I just found
out I'll be singing the"Seventh Inning Stretch" during the Crosstown
Classic at Wrigley Field in Chicago (June 11).
In the
summer, we'll be going to Europe with a band featuring Chicago guitar
hero John McLean. He'll be with us through the fall as the record comes
out & we're looking fwd to heaps of exciting gigs with him.
Thanks
once again for sticking with us. More to come!

Laurence says: OK, it's time to say at least this little bit:
we've finished the initial, main tracking for Kurt's next CD and I'm
pretty comfortable saying that this record is going to be amazing,
possibly the best work we've done yet. We recorded mid-March and the
cast included John Patitucci, Terreon Gully, Kobie Watkins, John McLean
as well as KE and myself, with Don Was producing.
Fans heard them live at the Green Mill just before the studio dates and raved about the shows both nights. The Mill was jammin'.
JazzSailor:
WOW!!!! I'd give you guys
the highlights, but every bit of the show was a highlight! They were in
top form...INCREDIBLE rhythm section...great to have Kobie back, and
playing with John Patitucci...WOW!!! the interplay between them was
stellar..and John Patitucci phenomenal...and John McLean on guitar..he
was often the guest during the Wednesday night shows...rounded out the
group. They opened up with Steppin' Out...Dedicated to You...Life
of the Mind...Norwegian Wood...huh, you say?? Nothing short of AWESOME! (more)
Shafi: Steppin' Out:
I heard this for the first time a year ago at the Mill and it has
become more refined and smoothed out with a stronger build-up musically
as the song progresses.
The interaction between Kobie Watkins, KE and Laurence Hobgood after
the piano instrumental on "Don't you
wonder what we'll find?" is almost like they were playing each
other into a corner playing their way out and meeting KE in the middle.
KE poses it as more of a question than Joe Jackson by dropping an
octave as required, and leads the audience on a ride to find the
answer.
