Greetings!

Living life along the Atlantic Corridor these days feels a lot like living in a small town. Our community and local businesses offer us countless opportunities to stay close to home for everything we need to manage our daily lives.

The summer calendar is chock full of activities and included are several thoughtful ways to support our local restaurants and businesses as we enjoy life in Bixby Knolls.

Concerts in the Park and at the Rancho-if you are preparing your own picnics please try out the heirloom varieties of fruit from the farmers markets on Thursday and Sunday. Market produce is not bred for stacking  -  it is grown for flavor! Stop by your favorite restaurant and ask if they have any picnic packages for the concerts. Shortnin' Bread will take orders at the Sunday Market or give them a call anytime - for pick up on Wednesday afternoon!

Bixby Knolls is also now home to the  finest selection of children's amenities in all of Long Beach! Little Owl Preschool has just opened in a state-of-the-art green building, the greenest in town.

From Averyboo Arts and Eat. Play. Grow. to Chess Camp at Elise 's and Shakespeare at the Expo , there is something for everyone. The Petroleum Club also offers a full summer of fun for the whole family for the price of one child going to 49er camp!

So, let's make it the summer of love in Bixby Knolls. Let's show our local proprietors some love and spend locally.

Thank you,

North Long Beach Community Action Group

A number of local issues were aired during today's discussion, including graffiti along the railroad right of way, a city council proposal to reduce the number of meetings and redevelopment matters.  There was a great discussion on the history of NLB CAG and its many accomplishments over the years.  I was definitely in good company today!

Elections for NLB CAG officers and board of directors were also held at this meeting.  The nominations were held last month, so the following were elected by acclamation today to serve on the 2010 NLB CAG Board:

Laurie Angel

Val Lerch

Jon Lehenbauer

Chuck Fowler

Christopher Hicks

Sharon Swain

Debbie Flynn

Congratulations to the 2010 NLB CAG Board.  I know they'll continue with great work and advocacy for North Long Beach.  Learn more about getting involved with the North Long Beach Community Action Group by visiting their website at www.nlbcentral.com.  Participation is welcome to anyone who wants to make positive difference in North Long Beach.

Long Beach Local
By Sasha Kanno Connected Corridor

I'm very excited to update you on the progress of the urban farm. On Thursday June 17th the Parks, Recreation and Marine Commissioners voted to approve and issue a right-of-entry permit to Long Beach Local for the use of 2712 California Avenue for the purpose of providing a one-acre urban farm and mulch yard. We got the farm!

With the land secured and the vision laid out now its time to get to work. Our vision is to create an urban/ rural connection within the local community and Farm Lot 59 will accomplish this in Long Beach.

As the Farm grows, so will the need for employees, creating green jobs in Long Beach. The Farm will require labor to plant, harvest, process and take produce to market. Green jobs such as program director, farm operator, produce stand manager, events coordinator, master composter are envisioned and additional support services such as website hosting and maintenance, newsletter, and bookkeeper will be required. There are also opportunities for entry-level jobs and internships. And don't forget we want to train young farmers. The farming industry has a very large generational gap the average farmer aged 55 or older has grown from 37% to over 60% in the last 60 years. Farm Lot 59 will be a local training ground for youth who want to continue in this trade and be able to make a living wage while doing what they love.

Farm Lot 59 will serve as an educational resource for the Long Beach community. Children, along with their parents and teachers can come and learn about urban farming and earth's ecosystems. Children will be able to meet chickens, explore the farming operation, and identify bugs and flowers.   Nutrition education is an important component to the Farm.  Start them early!  Young children love to eat their fruits and vegetables when they are exposed to good fresh produce and participate in the process of growing.   Entire families will learn how to shop on a budget and prepare meals at home. If you have interest in this aspect of the Farm please let us know. We are in the developing stages of this program.

A portion of the proposed Farm Lot 59 will be designated as the Municipal Mulch Pile, this will be our citywide composting and soil making facility. No more driving to San Pedro! The City of Long Beach along with restaurants and residents can bring their green waste to be composted. There will also be mulch provided by the City's Office of Sustainability Mulch-a-lot program. Successful gardening begins with healthy soil. Please let us know if you would like to be one of the first to get involved in this great program.

But all of these things will not be possible without funding. Please help us fund our project at Kickstarter, tell your friends and make this part of the community.

Kickstarter - Farm Lot 59

Kickstarter is a platform that helps people crowd-source funding for projects. It works like this: you launch a project, if enough people commit to financially backing your project by the target date, then the project gets funded and the backers receive prizes. If the target amount isn't met, the project does not get funded and backers are not responsible for their pledges. So please help us spread the word.

Thank you to everyone who has helped get us this far. You are all much appreciated and loved. See you in the fields!

Averyboo Arts is a Best Kids Party Place!

Averyboo gets a nod from the  Nickelodeon parents connect website, and needs local fans to weigh in.  You can click on the nickelodeon link and cast your vote now.

If you've never been there, stop in and see for yourself!  It's a fantastic place to spend some creative time.  The space is very inspiring and well stocked...there is something interesting to see everywhere you look.

This description from their site makes me wish my kids were still small-

Averyboo Arts provides a unique service to Bixby Knolls, providing a peaceful atmosphere and open-ended activities that are enriching and nurture imagination . We encourage children to be inventive by offering open access to our supplies, which includes everything from glitter and glue to spark plugs and pinecones. Our décor and creativity stations were influenced by the Reggio Emilia and Waldorf methods of teaching; providing a space that is engaging, beautiful, organized, incorporates nature, and allows the child to guide the experience. Parents are welcome to join in too!

They also have free WiFi for parents...sounds nice.

Averyboo is located 1 mile North of the 405 fwy. Exit Atlantic Ave. Cross streets are Atlantic and Roosevelt; next to Café Bixby @
