Senate Appropriations Committee Approves Fiscal Year 2010 Homeland Security Bill

On Thursday, June 18th, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a Fiscal Year 2010 spending bill for homeland security (bill number pending at press time).  The bill largely mirrors the House version of the bill (H.R. 2892), funding the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program at $420 million and the Assistance to Firefighters (FIRE) Grant program at $380 million.  Unfortunately this represents a 33% reduction in funding to the FIRE Grant program (the Obama Administration has proposed cutting the FIRE Grant program by as much as 70%).

The House of Representatives is expected to consider H.R. 2892 the week of June 22nd.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (NV) has stated the Senate may take up the spending bill before the July 4th recess, which begins on June 29th.  Once both houses of Congress have approved their respective spending bills, they will still need to resolve any differences before sending the final bill to the White House for the President's signature.

CFSI will continue to provide regular updates as the appropriations process moves forward.
