A Visit From the First Lady!

On Thursday, August 23rd, West End was proud to host Delaware's First Lady, Carla Markell, and Secretary of Agriculture Edwin Kee, who were given a tour of the Rodney Street Community Gardens and Cool Spring Farmers' Market.
West End Has a National Champ!

Congratulations to Above Xpectations Track Team member Charles "CJ" Cochran (center) who is now ranked #1 IN THE NATION after scoring 1st place in the Young Men's 400 Meter Hurdles at the AAU Junior Olympics held in Houston, Texas.
Teen Summit

Over 500 youth attended the 5th annual "Hollywood Invades Delaware" Teen Summit on Saturday, August 4th.  
 
The event was
planned and implemented by a group of 20 teens statewide with organizational support from the Delaware Prevention Coalition.  Sponsorship was provided by the Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families (Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health Services). 
 4th Place Winners!

On Friday, August 3rd, at the Doubletree Hotel in Wilmington, Shawn'Nise Gasby and Aliyah Bonsu - two participants of West End's Carrera Youth Achievement program - took 4th place at the Delaware Teen Idol Competition for their song about teen pregnancy. The Teen Idol talent competition kicks off Delaware's annual Teen Summit weekend.
West Side Plan Gains Traction

The West Side Grows coalition recently finalized a plan to revitalize the West Side of Wilmington, which includes a focus on Community Building & Quality of Life, Economic Development, Youth & Education, Parks & Gardens, Housing Preservation & Development, and Mobility & Safe Streets.

The plan has caught the attention of numerous community members, including Wilmington's mayoral candidates, who weighed in on the plan during a recent debate covered by the News Journal.               Mardi Gras Fundraiser

Many thanks to all who came out to support our first ever Mardi Gras fundraiser, which raised over $1,500 for West Side parks & gardens! 
 
Local Law Firm Mentors West End Youth

On July 12th and 19th, youth from West End's Positives Pathway Program (P3) were invited by Potter Anderson & Corroon, LLP to participate in a series of mentoring activities. These interactive sessions focused on employment and financial management.  Topics included: banking, money management, credit, goal-setting, and interviewing skills.
