Busy, Busy, Busy!
|
Every time I say that I've been busier than ever
before, fate, the universe or some imp somewhere sets out to prove me wrong! That
is certainly the case now because the last 4 weeks have set a new record on
busy-ness (I know that's probably not a word, but work with me here!). But it's
been good busy-ness.
Firstly, there was the article in New Idea written
by Antonia Kidman. Great article even if she never mentioned the AVN because at
least she got the point across that vaccination was not compulsory and that
children who aren't vaccinated can still survive childhood.
Then, the 2 articles in last weekend's Australian newspaper
which were so over-the-top when it came to spreading fear and avoiding
information. You will be very happy to hear that at least 50 of your have
written letters to the Australian about this issue. You can find most of them
on our website here and they are inspirational, indeed.
The Australian published my letter on Wednesday
(they cut the last paragraph and a half out, but most of the important bits
were included) but have not published anything else on this issue which is not
on! So I would like to ask you who are reading this to call the Australian and
ask to speak with the Editor of the Letters page to say that you would like to
see more letters on the vaccination issue published. This is especially
important if you've written a letter to the editor. If you haven't yet written
one, please consider doing this. Feel free to use someone else's information
from the AVN page above if that makes it easier for you. I'm sure nobody would
mind!
The number to call for the Australian is 02 9288
3000 - just ask to be put through the editor of the letters page. You can still
email your letters to [email protected]
and if you would like to speak with the editor of the Weekend Australian, his
name is Nick Cater and he can be reached at the same number I quoted above.
I've found him to be very approachable the couple of times I've spoken with him
and I'm sure he would find it instructive to hear from you too.
Please continue to send your letters through to me
at [email protected] and if you do speak
with someone there and get a response you feel I should know about, please also
email me to let me know.
Thank you all for your support with this important
issue. Oh, I almost forgot! Because of these articles in the Austrlian, a major
network television news program is now planning on doing a feature story on why
Australian parents are choosing not to vaccinate. And they will most likely be
including information from the AVN as well. So, you never know what will
happen. Drop a pebble in a pond and the ripples can spread and spread. Let's
all get our pebbles out and start dropping, OK?
Until next time - stay well.
Meryl.

Test Canceled of AIDS Vaccine Similar to Merck
Drug
A human test of the U.S. government's experimental
AIDS vaccine, similar to a failed Merck & Co. product, was canceled after a
top scientist determined it was unlikely to give useful results. An
international test of the [Merck] vaccine in about 3,000 people was halted in September
when 49 HIV infections occurred among those who received it. Click here to read more
Health Departments See Rise in
Whooping Cough Cases
Cases of whooping cough are popping up in North
Texas, with Denton, Tarrant, and Dallas counties close to or already surpassing
the number of cases reported last year. There were 132 confirmed cases of
pertussis in Denton County in the first six months of this year, versus 85 in
all of 2007. Physicians acknowledge that the pertussis vaccine is not 100
percent effective, but they hope to see an increase in vaccinations to curtail
the spread of the disease. Click here to read more
Please note -
the AVN is in contact with Bangladesh media to find out if the following cases
of 'hysteria' may be linked with vaccination - especially the 'cervical cancer'
vaccine.
26 more students affected by mass hysteria in
Bangladesh
Twenty six girls of a high school suddenly became unconscious in the classrooms
in the last two days in Bangladesh's southeastern Chandpur district, about 115
km southeast of capital Dhaka. Earlier, several school girls in the same high
school, 14 students in the country's southern Jhalokati district and 99 people
in southwestern Jessore district were attacked with mass hysteria during end of
June and early July Click here to read more

Measles:
it's back
Australia has a very high level of immunity
against measles - about 95 per cent of the population has been vaccinated
against it, though in some areas, such as the Atherton tablelands in Queensland
and the North Coast of New South Wales around Byron Bay, vaccination rates are
as low as 70 per cent. Why weren't they vaccinated? In some cases it was
because parents forgot, or couldn't manage it for whatever reason. In other
cases parents have made a deliberate decision not to have their children
vaccinated, because they are worried about the possible side effects of the
vaccine. In fact, side effects are usually minimal - chiefly pain at the
injection site and a mild fever. Serious side effects are rare, and are far
outweighed by the risks of complications of measles itself. Click here to read more

Earth Matters
Garnaut report shocks sleepy media and politicians
Despite launching his
anxiously awaited climate report with a warning that delaying action will cost
significantly more than any mistakes that may be made by acting immediately,
the federal Liberal and National parties have called for delays and the
Environment Minister Penny Wong has indicated that the implementation of a
number of critical components may need further work before they are acted on.
All major media outlets emphasised the impact on energy prices and the
subsequent impact this would have on the economy. Garnaut pointed out that
including petrol in an emissions scheme now will be cheaper in the long term.
His forums to present the report in Perth and Sydney have already booked out.
Victorian coal companies threaten to close down state
Richard McEndoe, CEO of
Victoria's electricity generator, TRUenergy announced on Saturday that an
emissions trading scheme as proposed by Professor Ross Garnaut would bankrupt
the company and leave Victoria without electricity. Even at a low cost of $25
per tonne of carbon dioxide emitted, brown coal becomes uncompetitive with
black coal and much less economic than natural gas. Despite this, the Victorian
government has announced a new $750 million brown coal plant based on new
'clean' technology which will be as polluting as a black coal plant. The 72
million tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted by the plant would completely the 10
per cent savings in domestic electricity planned for Victoria. The World
Wildlife Fund pointed out on Saturday that generators have had 18years of
warnings to prepare for emissions trading.
Australian farmers bury tonnes of carbon with new crops
Australian farmers are
leading a quiet revolution in sequestering carbon in agricultural soils, the
Australian Senate heard last week. Perrennial pastures and new cropping
practices are burying up to 25 tonnes of carbon dioxide per tonne of crop
produced, often hundreds of tonnes per hectare. Scientists estimate that an
increase of only half of one percent in the soil's carbon content across two
per cent of Australia's agricultural land would sequester Australia's entire
greenhouse gas emissions, according to Dr Christine Jones from Armidale.
World leaders forced to face impact of biofuels on food
The Guardian newspaper in
Britain has released a confidential report from the World Bank that shows the
global demand for biofuels has pushed food prices up by 75 per cent in the last
year despite claims by the US government that the impact has been closer to
three per cent. Development ministers of the world's eight biggest economies
are meeting in Hokaido, Japan this week to discuss International environmental
cooperation. A possible resolution to this dilemma has emerged from Stanford
Universityin the form of a study that shows Australia, Brazil and Africa are
well placed to use marginal or degraded agricultural land to grow massive
amounts of biofuel with no impact on food supplies. Plants such as JoJoba grow
well in arid regions and sugar cane performs well on soil that is unsuitable
for many food crops.
Public transport use at
all time high
The price of petrol has driven commuters back onto the public transport system
in all major Australian cities. Melbourne rail operator, Connex, last week
revealed a 33 per cent surge in patronage across the city, with some lines
operating at close to capacity. An extra carriage on all peak hour trains is
being considered as a temporary solution. No government has announced any
solution for regional Australia. The Federal government has committed to
spending 3.4 billion dollars on roads in 2009 and only $187 million on rail.
Mercedes announces range
of electric cars
German car maker Daimler has announced a series of new electric cars to be
released in 2010. The popular SmartCar, which weighs around 700kg and is the
most fuel efficient car on the Australian market will be available in both
hybrid and electric models, according to CEO, Dieter Zetche. Electric vehicles
are under development by most car manufacturers, and one produced by the
Bollore group with Italian design firm Pininfarina is to be available
commercially in June 2009. General Motors plans to sell its Volt model by 2010,
while Peugeot and Mitsubishi have announced they will join forces to develop
electric motors.
