notMYkid spreads the word about inhalants...
If you have ever painted, filled up a car with gas, or done housework with chemicals, you've likely smelled "inhalants." Fumes from chemicals are a type of depressant and can cause irreversible damage to the brain and organs or death if sniffing the fumes or "huffing" is done purposely. A report by SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates almost 600,000 youth ages 12 to 17 use inhalants annually, including common household products like nail polish remover, cooking spray, glue, markers and correction fluid. While experimental use of inhalants is often seen in late childhood and early adolescence, younger teens age 12 to 13 try inhalants more than any other class of drug, possibly due to their availability, expense, and being legal to purchase and possess.
It's never too late to talk to your kids about the risks involved with inhalant abuse. Experimentation with inhalants starts as early as elementary school and is considered to be a gateway drug to other substances, so the earlier the better. If you or someone you know is seeking help for inhalant abuse, you can contact the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition at 1-800-269-4237 for information on treatment centers and general information on inhalants.

Staying Safe Over Spring Break |
|
We have all heard the recent warnings about travel over Spring Break regarding safety measures, but your teens don't have to travel very far to find danger. Simply combining factors like unsupervised time, extra spending money and a group of stressed out teens can be a recipe for risk. In fact, 40 percent more youth try marijuana between the spring and summer months, compared to the rest of the year (SAMHSA, 2004). Stay active in your teen's life over Spring Break to help make sure the entire family has some safe down time!
- Help provide structured, supervised activities for your teen to keep them drug free, and know their plans when they are out with friends. Have them keep their cell phone handy and check in with you periodically.
- Hold regular conversations with your teen about the harmful effects of substance use, set clear family rules regarding substance use and be consistent.
- Be aware of the availability of drugs across the border and talk to your teen about the risks. Every spring, Valley schools see a spike in prescription drugs sold in schools from purchases made down in Mexico.
- Elicit the support of other adults. Get to know your child's friends and their parents. Don't assume that other families share your family's values.
- Stay up until your teen gets home at night.
- Keep close tabs on your liquor and medicine cabinets.
- Use a home drug test kit as a conversation starter and offer it to your teen as a way to say no.
"I can't. We have a drug test kit at home. My parents will test me, and they'll call your parents too."
