This Sunday,

August 26

10:30 a.m. ASSEMBLY: "Can social action -- political engagement--be a spiritual practice?"

Speakers: Heather Morse and Ralph Wyman. In the context of the present moment - in the campaigns for marriage equality in Minnesota and to rein in gun-proliferation - telling our stories expresses our values in a way that connects with others and creates openings for movement at the polls...and in society. Our UU values and principles compel us to move legislators and voters, and using stories, we achieve our goals through relationship and empathy, rather than debate. Add in active listening, and the power to change hearts and minds can be love-affirming, can shift our state and local politics, and in the process, change us.

This assembly will be followed by the MUUSJA Ice Cream Social!

Bike to FUS Day!

bicycle sign Sunday, August 26

Mark your calendars and gear up to bike to FUS with your family, fellow FUS members and friends in your neighborhood. The Society's Parking Task Force is spearheading the "Welcome and Wellness" theme for the year with this event to promote alternative modes of transportation to FUS. For those who are able-bodied and live within biking distance, here's a great way to include wellness in your FUS Sunday experience and to extend a warmer welcome to those who need the parking spaces close to our front doors.

Humanist Poetry Group chalice humanist
August 31, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
This month our session will begin with a participatory reading of June Jordan's angry poem "Kissing God Goodbye." Written in the face of Operation Rescue, the poem lashes out at religion and patriarchy. Of course we will follow up the group reading with discussion, and then give time to other poetry that participants bring. So if you find a poem that fits this "anger-management" category, bring it along (with some copies) to share. Facilitated by Audrey Kingstrom as a collaboration with the Humanists of MN.
Autumnal Equinox Celebration

September 23, 10:30 a.m. ASSEMBLY: "The Apple apple green Harvest: Meaning, Metaphor and Myth"

Welcome the arrival of autumn - a time to enjoy the fruits of summer labor and plan for the contemplative winter to come. We'll celebrate the apple and explore how it is woven into our cultural psyche both as sustenance and symbol. The children will lead the fall festival procession and be greeted by "Granny" Smith. Additional fabled "apple" characters will reflect on the humanist and UU perspectives that we bring to the harvest season. Remember to bring nonperishable food items for a collection for local food shelves. A luncheon will follow the Assembly. Visit the Seasonal Celebrations page on the FUS website from more information, or drop by the Seasonal Celebrations table at coffee hour in September.

Lead and Teach people in a circle
FUS Adult Learning and Growth invites any FUS member who would like: (1) to offer a one time educational presentation this year; (2) to facilitate a seminar or book discussion series; or (3) to form a new small interest group; to fill out a proposal form for the committee. Find forms in the FUS office or contact Wendy Jerome.
