This Sunday, January 15
9:30 a.m. FORUM:
"HIRE Minnesota"
HIRE Minnesota is working to ensure that public investments in infrastructure and renewable energy help lift people out of poverty, reduce racial disparities and contribute to healthier communities for all of us. HIRE brings people together with a vision of a new economy that works for all members of our community, especially low-income communities and communities of color. There will be a special collection to support the work of HIRE during the Assembly today.
10:30 a.m. ASSEMBLY: "A Stone of Hope"
Speaker: Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons. After 15 years of intensive planning and work, and 43 years following his death, a national memorial to the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. was dedicated this fall on the mall in Washington, D.C. Conceived from the quotation, "With this faith, we shall hew out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope," the statue and its surrounding space seeks to immortalize the inspiration of Dr. King's appeal to the conscience of the nation for the equal rights of Black Americans. How do we carry on that legacy and preserve that memory in our own lives and communities? What might this memorial teach us about that legacy today? This Assembly will include a special collection in support of HIRE Minnesota, and will be followed by a soup lunch.

Service Auction Proposals Due
Sunday, January 15 The FUS Board of Trustees invites the committees and groups at FUS to submit proposals for participating in the planning of the annual Service Auction Saturday, March 24, 2012 and the subsequent sharing of the proceeds. The purpose of the FUS Service Auction is to promote a sense of community within the congregation as well as to raise funds for worthwhile causes both in our congregation and in our wider community. Proposals should include: 1. The specific purpose funds would be used for 2. The amount of money you are hoping to raise 3. A percentage of the net profit you are willing to work for (net profit the last few years has been roughly $20,000) 4. The approximate number of volunteers your group can realistically commit to the Service Auction - both planning and event volunteers. Please submit your proposals to the FUS office by Sunday January 15! |

Adult Credo Class
January 22, 11:30, Dietrich RoomA number of adult members of the Society regret that they have never had the opportunity to write their own Credo statements, like the ones presented by our youth at the end of the Coming of Age class. To fill this gap, we have designed a process that invites adults to reflect, articulate, and discuss our ideas, and to create a statement that summarizes our beliefs, to be delivered to each other. This process involves short weekly writing assignments, shared with a buddy and the class leaders, that are edited and compiled by each participant into finished statements. Leader: Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons. Click here for more information.

Make a Resolution
Let's make 2012 the year Minnesota resolves to end homelessness. We know we cannot end homelessness in one year, but we can significantly move public committment! Will you make a resolution to (continue to) do your part in 2012? Here's how it works: 1. Write a resolution. Send your resolution to Heidi@dceh.org along with a picture of yourself. Or if you have a video camera: 2. Record a short video that includes the words "I resolve..." with your personalized message.

Backpacks!
The Dignity Center in Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church provides connections to support services for homeless and near-homeless members of our community. FUS regularly donates sandwiches and toiletry kits as well as volunteer time to the Dignity Center.
Ann Carlson, the director of the Dignity Center, is putting out an urgent call for backpacks. They are down to 0! A suggestion to anyone interested in donating one is to Google "college backpacks on sale" or "dollar store for backpacks" for some reasonable prices. Thank you!

Thank you!
The Memorial Blood Centers Blood Drive of December 11, at First Unitarian Society was a success. We reached our goal of 24 units! Thanks to each of you who donated blood or expressed interest in donating. It's great that we were able to contribute to the life of our community in this important way. We will plan another drive sometime later this year. Thanks again!
