This Sunday,

October 16

9:30 a.m. FORUM: Adult Credos

A number of adult members of the First Unitarian Society regret that they never had the opportunity to write their own Credo statements, like the ones presented by our youth at the end of the Coming of Age class. To fill this gap, we have designed a process that invites adults to reflect, articulate, and discuss our ideas, and create a statement that summarizes our beliefs, to be delivered to each other. Over the summer eight daring souls experimented with an online conversation that resulted in a group of adult Credo writers presenting their work at this forum.

10:30 a.m. ASSEMBLY: "Setting the Table"

Speaker: Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons. Statistical studies suggest that one of the three critical differences between thriving and stagnant religious communities is whether or not the expectations of membership are clear. Do people know what they are committing to when they join? What are the members able to count on one another to do? These questions bring to mind the task of parents who are struggling to instruct their young children about table manners. Does it really matter whether we use the proper fork? Why should we have to use a fork at all, if we don't feel like it? My elbows are clean; why shouldn't I be able to put them on the table? How do we answer these kinds of challenges, for ourselves, for our kids, for our FUS community? The Pearson Social Justice Awards will be presented this morning, and we will celebrate the young people from our Summer Social Justice Internship program, as well as members who completed the summer Credo class.

11:45 a.m. Soup Lunch

Upcoming Exhibitcorrigan over silver bay

The Art in the Gallery Committee presents pastel paintings by Rita Beyer Corrigan, opening October 23. Rita found early inspiration in the natural world, fascinated by the layering of color and shadow in the landscape. More recently, following the deaths of mother and sister, her work has incorporated intuitive responses to color and feeling. This exhibit runs through December 4.

for the Service Auction
It may feel like a long time from now, but it is not too early to start thinking about donations for the 2012 Service Auction! A particular focus of the coming service auction will be "Locally produced or Homemade" making this time of year the perfect opportunity to stash away some canned produce, salsa, and jam which you can donate to the service auction. Please contact Ashley or BJ at asiljenberg@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Doing Good Togetherdoing good together2

It is the hope of Jan Devor, Director of Religious Education at FUS, that all of our FUS families get the newsletter from Doing Good Together www.doinggoodtogether.org. Go to their website and click on "subscribe to the newsletter."

Here you will find ways for families to do simple things to make a difference in Minneapolis. We look for ways that even families with young children can help and this is the perfect place to get those ideas. We don't have to recreate the wheel -- this organization is terrific!!!
