9:30 a.m. FORUM: Immigration Issues in Arizona

FUS member Jack Lindeman lives in Arizona part of the year and is active with the Samaritans, an organization that patrols the desert seeking people from Mexico and Central America who have crossed the Arizona border south of here and are making their way north for jobs or to rejoin family. Jack has assisted these migrants with food and medical services. He has also seen first hand the racism and intolerance behind Arizona's draconian laws targeting the undocumented and impacting legal residents and citizens too. He will share his experiences on the front lines of this struggle for social justice. Please come and learn more about the experience of immigrants in Arizona.

10:30 a.m. ASSEMBLY: "Autumnal Equinox Celebration"

Assembly and Luncheon. Seasonal Celebrations Team. We will welcome autumn's beauty and abundance, and reflect on how our food choices affect our planet and our future. Remember those in need and share the bounty of the harvest with a collection of non-perishable food for local food shelves, and celebrate the season with poetry, music and reflections. A festive autumn luncheon will be served following the Assembly. Luncheon tickets will be sold at the door - Adults: $7, youth 18 and under: $3.

Bring Your Appetites

Eat 'n Meet Dinners Fall Season Begins Friday, September 23!

Every Friday evening at 5:45, FUS members and friends gather to share supper, conversation, and various programming offerings, from September 23 through November 17. Discovery Groups, book discussions, films, and other adult religious education opportunities will begin at 7:00, with child care available. Or, make your own plans for symphony or theater performances, but stop by FUS for dinner first. We will begin with seasonal fresh roasted corn, baked chicken, and ethnic Iraqi desserts. Watch the FLASH for future menu surprises. And, you can double your participation by volunteering to help set up or clean up one evening -- it's fast and fun; sign up at any Eat 'n Meet Friday evening. Click here for more information. See you there!

The Iraqi Art Projectiraqi art

The Iraqi Art Project brings you art and culture from the

Cradle of Civilization with images, created by Iraqi artists, of the people and the land. Building on the transformative power of art, this project helps to personalize relationships with Iraqis. It bridges American communities with Iraqi artists. Some of the art carry messages that invite the Children of Abraham -- Christians, Jews and Muslims -- to recognize their common roots.

There will be a reception with a special dessert on September 23, 6:30 - 7:30, following the Eat 'n Meet dinner. At 7:30 Adnan Shati will speak in the Dietrich room about art history in that part of the world.

UUA Common Read

Eboo Patel's memoir Acts of Faith has been selected as the 2011-12 Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Common Read. Patel is founder and executive director of the Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), an international, nonprofit, youth service leadership organization. Ten years after 9/11, the book describes the vulnerability of youth to violent, fundamentalist influences and makes a case for all of us, particularly youth, to promote pluralism through engagement in interfaith dialogue, education, and social justice work.

Casey Magnuson, FUS RE alumnus, is very active in IFYC at Hamline University. She will be speaking about her work and the work of the organization after our Eat 'n Meet dinner on Friday, October 21, 7:00.
