Exporting Hate: Homophobia in AfricaUganda

Assembly June 12, 10:30 a.m. Upper Assembly Hall
Speaker:  Rev. Mark Kiyimba

Rev. Kiyimba is the sole Unitarian Universalist minister in Uganda, where a pending bill before their parliament will make homosexuality punishable by death, and failing to report another's homosexuality a felony.  Rev. Kiyimba had to flee Uganda earlier this year due to police charges stemming from the fact that his church (our UU Church in Uganda) has sponsored two annual Standing on the Side of Love conferences, where pro-GLBT activists were able to connect and plan.  The church's home for AIDS orphans and their school for almost 400 village children are in danger because in Uganda the combination of affirming homosexuality and running programs for children puts anyone in jeopardy of being lynched by people who they believe are recruiting young people to be gay.  Rev. Kiyimba is being given sanctuary at the UU church in Tulsa at this time, and will be visiting the Twin Cities the weekend of June 11 - 12, hoping to raise awareness of the situation, and funds for his church, orphanage for children with AIDS, and his school, which will need financial support in his absence to survive. The antipathy toward homosexuality is not indigenous to African culture, but has been produced by western Christian missionary work. This will be a moving presentation by a little-known hero of our faith.

FUS Rock the Garden Patio Party

Saturday, June 18th 6:30-10:00 p.m.  rock the garden 2011 logo
Join the FUS backyard outliers for the Walker Art Center and 89.3 the Current's ROCK THE GARDEN annual music festival.  Bring your own picnic (and picnic ware), lawn chairs, blankets and beverages (wine and beer, if you'd like)  to hang out with friends and family on the FUS patio with great music in the background.  We don't quite know what the sound will be like, but let's check it out and have a fun summer evening in the heart of the city. Feel free to invite your friends.  Music line up for the evening is: Neko Case at 6:45 and My Morning Jacket at 8:30.  Rain or shine.

Staff ChangeTeresa West

Membership Coordinator, Teresa West is moving on. She writes, Hello all! Some of you may recall that I started work at FUS four years ago as I went back to school for graphic design. That career change has now come full circle. I've started as a graphic designer at United Hospital, and have resigned my position here at FUS. It has been delightful to work with the existing members here, and a joy to welcome in new members to the society. I will remain on as a member at FUS. I will stay on with limited hours until a new person is hired and trained. Regards, Teresa
