This Sunday, March 27
Community Hour Hot, fair-trade Peace Coffee is available. Child care is provided. The FUS Library, Bookstore and Gallery are open. A Forum program (see below) is offered. Opportunities for great conversations and connections abound! NEW EXHIBIT! FUS Gallery: The current exhibit in the Gallery is by two local artists, Cliff Wexler and Tammy Ortegon. Cliff's black and white drawings are inspired by urban and small town locations, real or imagined. Tammy's very colorful work is inspired by people of the world and their stories, offering a unique perspective on how we see each other; leading to dialogue and further understanding. There will be a reception in the Gallery following the Assembly on March 27 from noon until 2:00.
FORUM at 9:30 a.m.
So, You Think You Know?
Congregations like FUS are committed to advocating for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) people, but how much do individuals know about some of the legal issues and opportunities GLBT people actually face? This morning's Forum will feature Phil Duran, FUS member and Legal Director for OutFront Minnesota, who will run attendees through a light-hearted "quiz" about your knowledge ... and some of the answers may surprise you!
ASSEMBLY at 10:30 a.m. "Change for the Long Term"Speaker: Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons. With the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell as the official policy of the US military, another step has been taken along the road toward full equality for our gay and lesbian fellow citizens. At this point, the right to legal marriage may be only a generational waiting game. Our larger society continues to puzzle over long-standing challenges of racial and gender equality, but things are certainly different today from fifty years ago. When we seek to change a culture, and to shift prejudices and concepts that have prevailed for generations, how should we measure progress that may be hard to see in the course of just one lifetime? At this Assembly, a special collection in support of the work of OutFront Minnesota will be received, and we will celebrate 25- and 50-year membership anniversaries.
