Community Hour
Hot, fair-trade Peace Coffee is available. Child care is provided. The FUS Library, Bookstore and Gallery are open. A Forum program (see below) is offered. Opportunities for great conversations and connections abound!

FUS Gallery:  The landscape exhibit in the foyer is by the Minneapolis Drawing Workshop. This is their first exhibit devoted to landscapes; previous annual exhibits have been totally devoted to the figure. This group of artists meet twice a week to draw from a live model. Information on each artist can be found in the three-ring binder on the podium at the end of the hall. The exhibit runs through March 20th.

FORUM at 9:30 a.m. Discussion of the film The Social Network

the social network

Discussion Host: Gene Martinez. With numerous accolades, including six Golden Globe nominations, The Social Network tells the story of the creation of Facebook. It is impeccably scripted, beautifully directed, and filled with fine performances. Get ready to watch the Oscars this evening with an open discussion of a film that is sure to be one of the top contenders. In addition, what is the role that social media can play in expanding the influence of FUS in the community?

ASSEMBLY at 10:30 a.m. "To Be a Hero"

hero business man

Speaker: Erin Margit Dajka, Ministerial Intern. What is it that makes someone a hero? Do you ever wish you could step in and simply save the day? Many of our most popular entertainment media center around heroes and being a hero - movies, comic books, novels, news media, video games, and role playing games. This list indicates a near obsession around the desire to take part in stories of heroism. When the media recently exalted the efforts of Daniel Hernandez to save Congresswoman Gabriella Giffords' life, he responded by denying the designation of hero. President Obama felt compelled to directly contradict the young man's assertion. There is something powerful about the word "hero" that causes such strong reactions to its use. This service will consider what heroism is and explore its appeal, along with its possible negative implications.
