ASSEMBLY at 10:30 a.m.
"Put Your Values to Work"

Join us for the 7th annual Community Service Sunday! On this Sunday we have a special 15-minute service, and then go into the greater community to perform a variety of service-based projects. Then come back together for a lunch and sharing time. This year's service is July 25th, and we're inviting the neighborhood to join us!

Some of the events we have this year include:

* Making Sandwiches at the Simpson shelter
* Clean Lowry/7 Pools Park
* Sewing Tote Bags for the Dignity Center
* Voter Registration at Cub Foods
* Clean up FUS-sponsored section of the Midtown Greenway
* Landscaping at the Agape 24-hour Child Care Center

We also have a blood drive occurring during the morning, so please consider donating! Click here for helpful tips about donating from the American Red Cross.

We're serving a community lunch with the neighborhood at 12:30. We look forward to seeing you there!

Lest We Forgetpeace dove rainbow
August 8, 10:30 a.m.
Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons preaching.

Sixty-five years ago, on August 6 and 9, 1945, American forces effectively ended the Second World War by dropping atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, making the United States so far the only nation to have used nuclear weapons. As we struggle, more than half a century later, to make the world's arsenals smaller, it is worth recalling the circumstances, and the results, of that decision. This morning will offer an opportunity to renew our connections with some of the images, values, and hopes around the creation of war and peace. What, if anything, have we learned? What is it that we are called not to forget?

Social Action Update
chalice social justice
Immigration as a Moral Issue
A Proposed UUA Study/Action Issue for 2010-2014.
Given the justice-oriented nature of UU faith, UUs are called to be leaders in the struggle for immigrant and refugee rights, and to view immigration not only as a legal issue but also moral issue. To learn more from the UUA click here. Should FUS be more active in immigration reform? Email the FUS Social Action Committee with your ideas.

Ethical Eating
A UUA Congregational Study Action Issue for 2008-2012.
Religious organizations throughout the world have discussed the production, distribution, and use of food. Some people enjoy many food choices while others remain hungry. The food industry produces wealth, but small farmers and farm workers are often poor. Food production and transportation contribute to many environmental problems. To learn more from the UUA click here. Should FUS do more around the topic of ethical eating? Email the FUS Social Action Committee with your ideas.

Secular, Sober Support secular sober support logo
Secular, Sober, and Forging Your Own Path is a new (non 12-step!) self-help support group for recovering alcoholics and addicts, forming now, right here in the Twin Cities! The group's organizers are volunteers and sober addicts, who to make sure that other addicts have a choice about the style of their aftercare. They are looking for a few like-minded volunteers willing to help get the group off the ground. To volunteer, click here.

Do You Have a Wonderful Workshop Idea to Share With Our District?PSD logo
Prairie Star District is seeking workshop applications for the PSD Annual Conference 2011, "It Matters What We Believe," to be held April 8-10 in Des Moines, Iowa. Our conference theme comes from a favorite reading in our hymnal, (#657) by a beloved UU religious educator, Sophia Lyon Fahs. It begins, "Some beliefs are like walled gardens. They encourage exclusiveness and the feeling of being especially privileged. Other beliefs are expansive and lead the way into wider and deeper sympathies." Workshops are sought that respond directly to this theme, or will foster leadership development and grow our UU community through multigenerational conversation. Click here for information about the Conference and copies of the application. Deadline to apply is September 27, 2010.
