Join Us This Sunday, May 24
Join us this Sunday May 24 at 9:30 a.m. for the Forum "Paying for Universal Health Care: Single Nonprofit Payer?" presented by Dr. Elizabeth Frost, cochair of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP). PNHP advocates a publicly funded but privately delivered "Medicare for All" system. Learn more about this option and consider how UU values relate to the choices our nation must make about health care. For a more detailed description of this forum, click here.

Sunday's Assembly, at 10:30 a.m., "To Sign the flag swirlVivid Air: An Observance of Memorial Day" will be led by The Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons. This sermon will explore the idea that honor is an indispensable component of a humanist value system. What is it that can summon us to sacrifice our own interests and comfort for others, or for the sake of some greater good? And what does it mean to be the recipient of such sacrifices? For a more detailed description of this assembly, click here.

Please note: There will be no religious education classes, preschool, or nursery care today. Children are invited to attend the Forum and Assembly with their parents. Quiet play toys will be available for children in the Foyer outside the Upper Assembly Hall for use during Assembly.

The Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons writes:

"I prefer the positive, evocative language of the current document. I hope that we can appreciate the work of the Commission on Appraisal, and the many useful conversations they have initiated, without adopting the proposed revision."

Click here for Kendyl's complete column.

The denomination's Commission on Appraisal is proposing a major revision this year, and many UUs find the content disturbing and are working to have the 2009 General Assembly reject the changes.

Background documents, one detailing the Commission's rationale for the change, and others critiquing the proposed change, are available by clicking here. During Social Hour at FUS, Robert Tapp, FUS member, will be available for discussion and to collect signatures to a petition to reject the proposed changes.

Tim Barger Preaching  tim barger jpeg
Pending his doctor's approval of his travel plans, Tim will be here on Sunday May 31 to preach his last sermon as an intern here at FUS. Come to hear his words of wisdom, eat cake in his honor at social hour, thank him for his service to our congregation, and wish him well.

In the event Tim's plans are not approved by his doctor, Kendyl will offer a Question and Answer sermon, and we will still celebrate Tim's ministry with cake at social hour.
