And be sure to enjoy Sunday's Assembly, at 10:30 a.m., "Heritage Sunday: Ken Patton's Mystical Humanism" presented by The Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons. Revising the Purposes and Principles?
All of us are familiar with the Unitarian Universalist Association Purposes and Principles. The denomination's Commission on Appraisal is charged with reviewing these periodically. The current Commission is proposing a major revision this year, and many of us find the content disturbing and are working to have the 2009 General Assembly reject the changes.
* We feel the revision trivializes the historic nature of Unitarianism and Universalism and describes Unitarian Universalism in terms so general that our distinctiveness disappears.
* The importance of the sciences for us is minimized, and our emerging humanism is almost ignored.
* We at First Unitarian Society should be particularly concerned about this revision, and I urge all of us to consider the matter and consider petitioning the UUA Board of Trustees.
* Background documents, one detailing the Commission's rationale for the change, and others critiquing the proposed change, are available by clicking here. During Social Hour at FUS, I'll be available for discussion and signatures.

Social Action
Here are some opportunities gathered by our Social Justice Coordinator Carol Koepp. For more information visit the Social Action table (SAC table), located in the Lower Assembly Hall at FUS, or contact Carol directly by email or phone at 612-377-6608, ext. 103.
* Wanted: New College Gear donated to help spark a vision for college in more Northside youth! These items will be given away to Northside youth on May 30 at a kickoff celebration for the launching of the Northside Achievement Zone. Bring your items to the SAC table by Sunday May 24. Polly Peterson is taking orders for U of MN items, also at the SAC table.
* Kinship of Greater Minneapolis is desperately seeking mentors for Northside children, many with an incarcerated parent. These children are the most vulnerable in our community. Without intervention, 70% of children of incarcerated family members will go to prison.
* Looking for a cheap vacation? Sign up for the Habitat for Humanity build: June 22 - 26. This might seem like a long time off, but it's really not too early to set aside some of your vacation time to join other UUs, a Habitat family, and Habitat crew for this rewarding experience for one day, two days or the whole week. A very inexpensive (free) but fulfilling time away from home and work. All skill levels are welcome.
