UU Parenting Resources
 holding hands
Welcome to a new feature in the Unitarian FLASH! Starting NOW, in each issue, our Religious Education Director, Jan Devor, will offer resources that may be of interest to people with children in their lives. (If you think about it, that's all of us, folks!) Use it well and be sure to remember your friends and family members who may find this information helpful, and forward it to them by clicking on the link called "Forward email" at the bottom of each Unitarian FLASH.

Church of the Larger FellowshipCLF logo
A wealth of UU RE resources can be found at the Church of the Larger Fellowship. The Church of the Larger Fellowship is a member congregation of the UUA, founded over 50 years ago, to serve the needs of isolated UUs. CLF offers religious education resources for children and adults. For a brief summary of CLF, click here.

Check out the following RE resources on the CLF website:

  • The KidTalk Web page for kids. With links to activities and information about holidays around the world, as well as featured people from UU history, social justice projects, spiritual practices, ways to practice our principles and a forum for kids to ask questions on religious topics, each month KidTalk provides a way for kids to connect to UUism, and for parents and religious educators to glean great ideas for religious education.
  • uu&me!
  • , a magazine that helps kids think about what really matters now appears as a 4 page insert in the UU World. You may purchase back issues of uu&me! from the CLF shopping cart and view the archives for tables of contents from past issues.
  • Between Sundays
  •  a website designed to help parents and other adults answer religious questions raised by children and youth. What does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist and how do our/your religious beliefs make a difference in the world? These are the two basic questions underlying the thematic presentation of questions and "answers" on this site. Lessons and activities to address specific questions at different ages are adapted from curricula published by the UUA, by independent authors, and by the Church of the Larger Fellowship. Some lessons and activities are suggested for a single age level; others are recommended for all ages. You can browse the site by age level or subject category or search by key words. The categories are those used in curriculum development by the UUA Department of Religious Education. In addition, a Resources section provides informative material just for adults using the site. Don't be concerned about your own level of knowledge or depth of personal understanding. Learn along with your kids, explore religious concepts together-model the "search for truth and meaning" in an open and loving environment.

Summer Book Club
ReFirement Summer Book Club
book group discussion
This summer, the FUS ReFirement Group will have a series of book discussions, and we'd like you to join us. We are a group of women in our late 30s, 40s and 50s who meet to discuss issues of mid-life transition, balancing busy lives, and exploring the big question of "what's next?" in a supportive, energetic, and fun environment. We are going into our third year as a group, and we're planning a summer book series on these dates:
  • Sunday, June 29 at Wendy Andberg's: Transitions, by William Bridges. The classic guide to dealing with planned and unplanned life changes, from letting go, to moving through the "wilderness", to moving on with peace and confidence.
  • Friday, July 18, 6:00 p.m. at Deb Magnuson's: You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise Hay. Years before The Secret, Louise Hay, now in her 80s, was sharing her message about the power of beliefs and the mind/body connection. Lose the woo-woo, keep the amazing power of the human mind and see what can happen.
  • Sunday, August 13, 5:00 p.m. at Melanie Jordan's: How, Then, Shall We Live, by Wayne Muller. Connect to the human longing for inner wholeness and guidance to live a life of meaning, purpose, and grace.  Muller is a beautiful writer (author of Sabbath, which would be another good book to read to prepare for this meeting) who asks us to ponder powerful questions about living intentionally.

If one or more of these dates work for you, and if these books sound interesting, please call or e-mail us for more information: Deb Magnuson or Shelley Shreffler

6/15/08 ASSEMBLY: "Unitarian Universalists in Community: The General Assembly"
Coordinator: Polly Peterson, Who's Been There
The UUA General Assembly is the annual gathering of Unitarian Universalists across the United States. We will hear from people who have attended in the past and send off those who are attending this month in Ft Lauderdale. And, we will look forward to 2010 when the Twin Cities will host thousands of UUs for that year's GA. Join us to see how FUS fits into the greater community of Unitarian Universalists.

6/22/08 ASSEMBLY: "Seeing the Connection"
Coordinator: Nasser Pooladian, Glass Artist
During this service, we will hear several members of FUS talk about how their art, often produced in isolation, connects them to a larger community.

6/29/08 ASSEMBLY: "The Care and Nourishment of Civil Society"
Coordinator: Heather Martens, President, Citizens for a Safer Minnesota
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court will hand down a decision that could change the basis of laws governing guns in this country. How to deal with the threat, or use, of deadly force is a challenge for any civil society. What will the Supreme Court decision mean? How might it change the way in which we care for our civil society and live out the values of democracy, peace, liberty and justice?

7/6/08 ASSEMBLY: "Native Americans in Minnesota"
Coordinator:  John Nordquist
Guests from the Minneapolis Native American Center will visit the society in this, the sesquicentennial year in Minnesota.
