February 17 Assembly
"The Problem with Love"
Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons

"Love is not all," says the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, and she is correct. There is a pious sentimentality which suggests that all we need is love that ends by attributing to one human emotion the capacities formerly vested in the gods. What is it reasonable to expect from love and what else is required for our individual and collective well-being? Please note that this will be our Sweater Sunday, and the Upper Assembly may be cooler than usual. You are encouraged to dress warmly to remain comfortable. This program is part of our Green Sanctuary effort to increase awareness of the need to decrease our carbon dioxide emissions to work against
global warming. We encourage you to lower the thermostat at home as well.

February 24 Assembly
"Somebody Say Something"
Rev. Al Gallmon

We welcome to our pulpit this morning the Rev. Al Gallmon, Jr., the senior pastor of the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, a largely African-American congregation on the north side of Minneapolis. Rev. Gallmon is a graduate of Howard Divinity School and was a leader in the corporate world before entering the ministry. He is also a member of the Minneapolis Downtown Senior Clergy and was one of
the participants in last year's Journey in Faith to Israel/Palestine. In addition, he is a leader in the work of socialjustice activism in the north side community.

There are no forums scheduled for February.

Bob and Margaret McCoy included in UUA story on  reproductive choice.
Bob McCoy

On Feb. 1 the UUA released a story entited "Two Who Paved The Way for Reproductive Choice." The story focuses on the contributions of Estelle Griswold and Vera Weiner in Connecticut, but the writer also includes the contributions of Bob and Margaret McCoy at FUS. The writer notes that while Griswold and Weiner were active in Connecticut, "At nearly the same time, in Minnesota, a group of Unitarians and activists gathered to discuss how to obtain legalization of abortion in the state. In 1966, the group, including Bob McCoy, a member of the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis, founded the Minnesota Council for the Legal Termination of Pregnancy (MCLTP). MCLTP initially backed a bill which would allow abortions if approved by a committee of doctors, but soon adopted the view that abortion was a personal decision, and worked to completely overturn the state's abortion ban."
