Collection for Local Food Shelves

In celebrating the autumnal equinox, we pause to reflect on our place in the web of life and consider the lessons of earth's transitions for our community. The abundance of harvest time beckons us to be generous of spirit and therefore we invite you to bring canned and dry goods to Assembly on Sunday, September 23 to help stock local food shelves.

Minister Offering Adult Education Class
The Rev. Dr. Kendyl Gibbons if offering a discussion-based class on September 27 and October 11 at First Unitarian Society in the Dietrich Room. The group will start with a light supper at 6:30 p.m. and the program will end around 8:30 p.m.
The class will explore: What aspects of our institutional life, that we take for granted and don't even see any more, make it difficult for people who already agree with our humanist ideas to find a home here at First Unitarian Society? If there are changes that would allow that process to happen more easily, are they changes that we would be willing to undertake?
As a starting point for the discussion, the group will use two books: Hemant Mehta's I Sold My Soul on E-Bay and Jim Henderson and Matt Casper's Jim and Casper Go to Church. Both texts are available for purchase in the First Unitarian Society bookstore.

Celebrate UN International Peace Day with Action
The UN General Assembly unanimously declared September 21, annually, to be the UN International Day of Peace, a day of global cease fire and nonviolence, asking all people to commemorate it in an appropriate manner. Here's one way to celebrate.
Join peace activists on September 21 at 4:30 p.m. on the corner of 3rd St. and Cedar Ave. (Mayday Plaza) on the West Bank in Minneapolis for an Iraq War Moratorium Protest and Bannering.
Every 3rd Friday of the month there will be a day of activity against the war. The Iraq Moratorium Committee and the General Strike for Peace groups support this initiative. The Iraq Moratorium declares it "will be an escalating monthly expression of determination to end the war." People will be encouraged to make a break with business as usual. Both the Moratorium and General Strike campaigns urge people to take action on those days, including vigils, protests, forums, wearing black armbands and more. Many anti-war activities will be included and encouraged throughout the day. Subsequent event locations will be announced.
