Joel Harrison and Singularity Thursday, October 20, 7:30pm Knickerbocker Theatre
New York - based jazz guitarist and composer Harrison leads his seven-piece band in "Singularity," a special program showcasing how the techniques of his favorite modernist composers (among them John Adams, Charles Ives, and Olivier Messiaen) underscore his own writing.
The "New Orleans Times-Picayune" has said, "Add Joel Harrison to Metheny and Frisell as guitarist/composers who have created a new blueprint for jazz." The German publication "Jazzthing" has noted, "Definitions blur, and suddenly it no longer matters whether Harrison improvises or composes.... It all comes down to this: imagination without limits."
Harrison's septet features Christian Howes on violin, Seamus Blake on sax, cellist Dana Leong, Jacob Sacks on piano, Drew Gress on bass and drummer Dan Weiss.

Exhibit: A. C. Van Raalte: Holland's Founding Father Through December 29 Holland Museum
This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Holland's founder, A. C. Van Raalte. Late in 1846, he, his wife, and young family crossed the Atlantic, accompanying a group of devout emigrants who were seeking to escape economic hardship in the Netherlands. They wished to find a community where they could earn a decent livelihood and worship and educate their children without government interference.
In early 1847 they settled in the wilderness at Black Lake, where other emigrants soon joined them, thereby establishing the Holland Colony.
Van Raalte functioned not only as pastor but also as community leader, encouraging education and promoting economic development. His legacy would last for generations and can still be felt today.
