Film: "Rebirth" Thursday & Friday, September 15 & 16 Knickerbocker Theatre
From early 2002 through 2009, the "Rebirth" film crew chronicled the lives of five people directly affected by 9/11. Film: "Cast a Giant Shadow" Tuesday, September 20 The Red Barn Theatre
'Cast a Giant Shadow' is a true story about the former American Army officer who becomes Israel's first general in its armed struggle to become a nation. The big-budget all-star cast includes Kirk Douglas, Angie Dickinson, Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner, Senta Berger and John Wayne.
Colonel David Marcus (Douglas) is recruited by the Israelis to help form an army. Marcus is conflicted because of his sudden appreciation for his Jewish heritage. Realizing that each of Israel's Arab nations has vowed to invade the poorly prepared country once the partition has been made, Marcus agrees to become commander of the Israeli forces just before the war begins.
Wayne, whose Batjac production company funded the film, appears briefly as an American general. The film, directed and written by Melville Shavelson, is based on the book by Ted Berkman. The film was beautifully shot in Israel and Rome by Aldo Tonti. The action scenes buttress the impressions of Isreael's immense struggle.
