Resurgence of Manufacturing Employment

Manufacturing employment growth has outpaced retail sector employment growth in the Austin area for 13 consecutive months, according to the August issue of Data Points by the Capital Area Council of Governments.  CAPCOG reports that manufacturing employment growth surpassed retail employment growth in only six other months since 2001.  Manufacturing jobs pay an average of $90,000, three times the average salary in retail.

The August Data Points also notes that sustained job growth has fueled a tight residential home and apartment market. While new building permits slowed significantly during the Recession, the first half of 2012 has seen 10,000 new residential permits issued.
