Small Businesses May Qualify for Health Insurance Tax Credits

Four in five Texas small businesses, nearly a quarter of a million in all, are eligible for tax credits to defray the cost of their employees' health insurance this year, according to a new report by Families USA and the Small Business Majority.

While most of the provisions of health care reform legislation do not take effect until 2014, small business tax credits begin this year. Businesses with fewer than 25 workers and average wages of less than $50,000 will be eligible to receive a tax credit for the health insurance that they provide for their employees. The value of the credit this year (and until 2014) is up to 35 percent of the employer's costs for employee coverage.  Nonprofit employers may receive tax credits up to 25 percent of the costs for employee coverage.
