Treatment, Not Punishment: Untangling the Juvenile Justice - Mental Health Knot | An estimated 1 in 5 youth have a diagnosable mental health disorder and a disproportionate number of them are ending up in the juvenile justice system. Texans Care for Children has released a policy brief "Treatment, Not Punishment: Untangling the Mental Health-Juvenile Justice Knot" to explore best practices and recommendations for improving the ways we respond to these young people's illnesses. |
Comments on Draft Texas Health and Human Service Plan Accepted Through Friday |
Written comments on the draft Health and Human Services System Strategic Plan 2011-15 will be accepted through 5 p.m. Friday, May 21st. Click here for a link to the plan and instructions for providing comment via email. Statewide video conferences will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 20th. Austin sites for viewing the video conference are:

The five agencies included in the HHS Strategic Plan are:

Community Dialogue on Use of AISD Facilities |
 Educators, parents, students, civic and business leaders, and other community members are invited to share their opinions on the use of Austin ISD facilities. Celebrate Adult Literacy Accomplishments in Central Texas | Mayor Susan Narvaiz of San Marcos and the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas will host a celebration of progress made in moving our community toward 100% literacy on Thursday, June 3rd from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Policy makers, literacy service providers and adult learners who have benefited from these services are invited to the free reception and awards luncheon to be held at the San Marcos Conference Center, 1101 McCarty Lane in San Marcos. Senator Florence Shapiro and Representatives Rob Eisler and Mark Strama will be honored for their work to pass legislation that has increased access to adult literacy programs. Join in the Transportation Conversation - It's a "SNAPP" | The Social Network and Planning Project "SNAPPatx" is a project of the nonprofit Texas Citizen Fund. SNAPPatx is working collaboratively with the City of Austin, Capital Metro, CAMPO an other partners to use social networking to engage citizens in transportation planning. SNAPPatx is conducting brief transportation surveys every two weeks and includes blogs, facebook, twitter and links to important planning information and data. Over the next thirty years Austin is expected to add 750,000 people and 300,000 jobs. Help plan how this new growth can best be accommodated by participating in Austin's Comprehensive Planning process. The second round of "Meetings in a Box" will continue through June 30th. iChoose Teen Summit |
 iChoose is a city-wide teen summit to educate and empower young people to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The 3rd annual free event for 13-18 year olds will be Thursday, June 24th, from 9:00-4:30pm at UT's LBJ School of Public Affairs. The iChoose Teen Summit offers workshops on healthy relationships, abstinence, reproductive anatomy, family planning, talking to parents about sex, alcohol, college readiness, GLBTQ issues, and much more. Lunch and a t-shirt will be provided to all participants, prizes will be offered, and performances by The Cipher, Picture Perfect Clique, and teen artists will be held throughout the day.
