City Faces $11.4 Million Budget Shortfall
211_newlogoThe Austin City Council held a special called meeting this morning to begin looking at projected General Fund revenues and expenditures for the coming fiscal year, which begins October 1.  The City Manager presented estimated revenues and expenditures that included a 2.5% salary increase for civilian employees and a contractually required 3% increase for uniformed officers. According to the staff presentation, Council will face a $11.4 million budget shortfall if it chooses to increase property taxes to the rollback rate and a shortfall of $28.1 million if it adopts an effective property tax rate.  
 
Staff will develop the 2010-2011 budget between now and June and community input forums will be held in early June.  Visit the City of Austin Budget website for copies of today's presentations and for continued updates on the budget process.
Federal Health Care Reform - State Impact
The House Select Committee on Federal Legislation, chaired by Rep. John Zerwas, will hold its first meeting tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Room E2.010 of the State Capitol.   The committee will hear invited testimony from state agencies on the impact of the federal health care reform legislation on the state and its citizens.  You can watch the hearing live from your computer on Texas Legislature Online.

Austin Travis County Integral Care has launched a new Spanish-language website to provide culturally and linguistically relevant resources on behavioral health and developmental disabilities to the local Hispanic community. Spanish speaking individuals can now find in-depth and timely information about ATCIC's services, events, reports, providers and system changes.
CAMPO Regional Transportation Plan 
The People, Planning and Preparing for the Future plan will guide development of a comprehensive multimodal regional transportation system through the year 2035. The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) developed the plan to address regional transportation challenges and to ensure that our region continues to receive transportation funding through the US Department of Transportation.

Austin Strategic Mobility Plan
trafficAustin is expected to double its population over the next 30 years. In the first round of Imagine Austin, over 5,000 Austinites said they want our community to offer a diverse population, a mix of housing types, better transportation options and opportunity for local business growth. The second round of Imagine Austinwill focus on how we create a transportation infrastructure that accommodate future growth. A series of forums will be held throughout Austin over the next week and a half. Visit the Comprehensive Planning website to learn more.

People who did not return their Census form can expect a visit from a U.S. Census worker in the next few weeks.  The worker will show id, ask ten questions and will NOT ask to see documentation of any kind.

Texas  Has Highest Share of Minimum Wage Workers in the Nation
Among hourly-paid workers in Texas, 474,000 had earnings at or below the prevailing Federal minimum wage in 2009, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. (See chart 1.) Nearly 5.6 million workers were paid at hourly rates, representing 54.3 percent of all Texas wage and salary workers. Texas workers paid at or below the Federal minimum accounted for 8.5 percent of these hourly-paid workers, the highest share in the nation.

Immigrant Services Directory
The Immigrant Services Network of Austin has released a new Immigrant Services Directory of social service programs in Central Texas that help families who are recently immigrated to the Austin area. The directory includes service and contact information for programs in healthcare, legal services, financial services, victim services, education, basic needs and short-term resettlement. 
Conference on Immigration, Education and Our Future 
211_newlogoImmigration policy limits the ability of qualified immigrants, who were educated in this country, from pursuing a career here. Austin Community College and St. Edward's University will host a conference, "A Dream on Hold" featuring speakers who will discuss the impact of immigration policy that limits career success in spite of educational access. Local, state and national leaders will speak at the conference on April 30that St. Edward's University. Learn more and register

Texas Suicide Prevention Symposium
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Texans and the third leading cause of death among youth ages fifteen to twenty-four, and the second leading cause of death for college age students.

iChoose Teen Summit
iChooseiChoose is a city-wide teen summit to educate and empower young people to prevent unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. The 3rd annual free event for 13-18 year olds will be Thursday, June 24th, from 9:00-4:30pm at UT's LBJ School of Public Affairs. The iChoose Teen Summit offers workshops on healthy relationships, abstinence, reproductive anatomy, family planning, talking to parents about sex, alcohol, college readiness, GLBTQ issues, and much more. Lunch and a t-shirt will be provided to all participants, prizes will be offered, and performances by The Cipher, Picture Perfect Clique, and teen artists will be held throughout the day.
