Help Set Affordable Housing Priorities

About 24% of that amount remains for future projects.  The City seeks input on community priorities for these remaining funds as well as other funds available through Austin Affordable Housing Finance Programs.

There are three opportunities for public input:

Latino Pay Gap in Texas
A majority of Latinos in Texas are U.S. born, which is not the case nationwide.  But this difference does not translate into better economic opportunity for Texas Latinos.  The Latino wage gap in Texas is significantly worse than the U.S. as a whole.  The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas has just released an analysis "Getting to the Bottom of Texas' Latino Pay Gap" to take a closer look at this issue.  The Chart below is taken from the report.

Related behavioral issues such as substance abuse or domestic violence also remain persistent problems. For example, nearly one-third of U.S. adults suffer from some type of mental illness or substance abuse. In addition, an estimated 1.3 million women are physically abused by their intimate partners each year and about 1 million abused children are identified each year.  Read the program brief of the research findings.

Over Half Minority Families in Texas are Unbanked or Underbanked
Access to basic banking services is a critical first-step in achieving financial self-sufficiency.  The Federal Insurance Deposit Corporation (FDIC) recently released the most comprehensive survey to date of unbanked and underbanked households in the U.S.  The survey found that one in four households in the nation and one in three in Texas are either unbanked or underbanked.  Click here to review the survey results.  Click on the graph below for a link to Texas results.  As the graph from the report below shows, discrepancies were even more pronounced for racial and ethnic minorities.  Click on the graph for a link to the Texas results.
